Cabinet around pedestal Sink

As you know, a pedestal sink offers no space for more than a bar of soap. I have this in my downstairs 1/2 bath, but want to enhance look and practically. My first though was to build a typical sink cabinet just below flush with the sink bowl, but then I saw a design like this.

Now imagine this design comes out further (space is narrow and only about a foot on each side to the wall) by a bout a foot on each side and the add side storage/drawers that come close to flush with the top of the bowl. Standard Cabinet doors on the front. Here is a concept drawing from a decidedly non-artist! (-;

I'm also making a french cleat mounted above toilet cabinet out of walnut or other dark wood so this would match. Thoughts?

I like the idea. Here s why. If you need to access the pipes behind or underneath you just pull entire cabinet out of the way. None of this circus clown contortionist back destroying work.

Very true! Happy accident! Most of the homes in my area have this pedestal sink setup, so I'm also looking for something that makes mine different. I'll probably be selling in 3-5 years.

Think I would just replace pedestal sink if vanity cabinet is really needed. Do the wall mount first and see if that is sufficient.

Me too

It's not just about storage either. It's about surface space around the sink to rest thing in use. I understand what you're saying, but the project is as much about the woodworking challenges as it is about the functionality/need. But I respect your opinions.

boyce523, I hope I've quoted your reply correctly. Have you thought about a small free standing cabinet/chest that could go beside/near the sink but not enclose the pedestal. That would alleviate the odd look of going around the pedestal. You could incorporate design details of the wall cabinet you're building. As SMP notes, the picture looks a little "kludgy."

Thank you everyone for answering. Seems like the majority are for replacing the sink which is something I wasn't intending on doing. I'll still do the wall cabinet and potentially a 'medicine' cabinet above the sink while I consider other options for enhancing the surface area around the sink. Maybe just s shelf or two near the sink or nothing.
