I've got a 1980 / 1981 saw. I don't know enough to tell you how to fix the problem, but I can take a picture of the blade connection on mine if it will help. Just let me know and I'll try to get it posted before the end of the night.

 

It's been a while, but I think there is a roll pin that holds the pinion gear to the adjustment shaft that has probably broke or fallen out.

You should be able to fix it without messing with the trunnions, but it's really hard to get to unless you turn the saw upside down.

 

Thanks. Yes a picture would be good so I have something else to refer to. And I'll have to take a look and see if there is a roll pin somewhere. It just wasn't something I wanted to start with last night. I just wanted to make the cut and get on with the project. Thanks.

 

The problem may be occurring from sawduct build up on the stops for the trunnions.

If you have an air compressor rempve a couple of the side covers tilt the blade and blast air around the helix gears and ensure there is no build up.

If you have no air a short piece of wire may also unclog the mech it in fact that is the problem.

A visual inspection will confirm any compacting of wood waste

You may also find the lock collar has moved on the shaft so check it also, and relocate correctly if required.
All this can be done without removing any critical parts.

 

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing regarding the lock collar. I thought that if I loosened the retainer on the inside of the cabinet I could screw the tilt mechanism in a few more turns in order to give me the turns to be able to back the saw blade up to 90 degrees. As much as I was trying to avoid this I may have to turn the saw over to make things easier. It's either that or try to squeeze underneath on the floor and I may not get up after doing that.

 

From OWWM, here is a manual for the 113's of that era. It has an exploded parts view of everything below the table (page 40).

What you describe shouldn't happen. There is a stop collar (see #23 in the drawing) that should keep the tilt screw from backing out of the threaded insert. You will probably find that stop collar in the sawdust underneath your saw

I agree with others here - you will have to flip the saw over and work at it to get this back together.

 

I see what you're saying. I'll have to check my manual/saw and see if it's the same thing. I can only hope it's in the sawdust. My manual is different. I don't recall seeing the part you mentioned in the exploded view. I really need to get in there and clean it up and check to make sure it's aligned properly. Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Just wanted to say thanks for all who've posted so far. I have a similar issue where my blade stops just at 90 degrees, but I have to kind of put more force on the wheel to get there than I should. Ideally, I'd like it to freely move a little past 90 degrees and I can just take 10 seconds and use a square, which I think is a good habit anyway. I've poked around a little, but never saw a 90 degree stop. Good info!

I'll have to get the saw ready for that so I'm ready for when the muscle shows up for Thanksgiving and can give me a hand with it. Thanks again for your help!

Well just wanted everyone to know who was kind enough to comment that I think I found the problem. Once the saw was flipped over it was farily apparent. The cabinet is bent out of shape where the tilt screw is connected. It must have happened at some point when tilting the blade. It was not easy to see right side up but both my son and I noticed it right away. Everything else is in place correctly. Replacement cabinet is on the way. We were both in agreement that trying to hammer it back into shape wouldn't be the long term solution. Used cabinets are inexpensive and it's certainly less expensive than a replacement saw. Thanks again everyone, your comments were helpful in making sure everything was set up and aligned correctly.
