I just bought and received a lovely #7 from a fellow LJ. I had been looking for a #8 on feebay etc…

When I received the #7 I was surprised by the heft. I've only seen pictures, and for me, scale is tough to determine over the web. The #8 looks like a good deal to me, but I'd better pass for now lest my beloved wife think me a plane hoarder.

I do need another plane though… Specifically a #5-ish type which is set up for (I forget the term) scraping? Gouging? A radius on the blade for roughing out face material cross grain. I'm not familiar with numbering systems for manufacturers other than Stanley, so perhaps one of these fits the bill?

Also desperately needed: a nice router plane, a beading plane, shoulder plane, rabbet plane, dado plane.

I suppose I could just buy some router bits, but I find less joy in machining the pieces than in hand working them. I'm still no purist, because I'm not giving up the table saw, the CMS, and I'll keep the thickness planer and jointer around for when time is an issue.

Nice planes, Red. Fortunately for my pocket book, I am needing to reduce my hoarding as well.

Buckethead, I assume you are referring to scrubbing? A #5 set up with an aggressive camber on the blade would definitely do that. The 14C above is the same size as a #5 and would fit the bill perfectly just by regrinding the iron to have a camber (plane-speak for radius). It's also a great price.

Great job on the No.8 restore.

A friend of mine has been looking for a No.8 for a while but he is looking for a 'unique fixer upper opportunity'

Still, I'll pass along a link to this page. He may be interested once he sees it.

I've got an MF 14 just like that (although in rougher shape when I got it) and its my favorite plane to use. Whoever picks it up is getting a really good user.

Buckethead- ya, Millers falls numbered by the actual length pf the plane in inches. So a no 14 would be a Stanley 5.

I put you down for that one. This would be a good plane for that purpose. I can hone the iron at a radius if you'd like.

I wanted to come back and say that my plane arrived in excellent condition. A miller falls #14.

I'll also add that seeing it in person, and handling it, I feel like I should be sending more money. This is an amazingly well made plane in exceptional working condition. I got it for a song.

Thank you Red! It is apparent that you wanted to share some of the bounty out of a spirit of comradery rather than making money. (Although there's nothing wrong with the motive for profit, IMO)

As soon as I get a chance to get back on my bench build, I will report back on how it performed on the maple 4/4 stock I need to surface for the tool trough.

I too, was impressed with what I received. I sent $30 and Red put up $12.50 of that in shipping. This is my 1st hand plane and I don't know anything at all about them or what to look for but it seems to be a great starter plane. I'll be adding refinishing of the knob and tote to my project queue.

Cool. I'm glad they found good homes. It's more fun for me to "help out" other woodworkers than get top dollar.

debianlinux- Darn, if I would've known that was your first plane, I would've tuned and sharpened it. Sometimes that can be helpful.
