Since they would probably charge you at least $99 shipping one way if you were buying a new one, I would say that they are getting the better deal. I would want at least one way shipping but really double that since theoretically, they would have have to pay for shipping both ways if they sent you another complete unit. It will definitely still be a better deal for them to give you $200 and not have to sell it for half off or spend labor fixing it so that they can sell if for more. Your time and hassle to send it back are worth something too but for them they will actually have to spend more money so you have some leverage.

Personally, I would send it back regardless since when I buy something that is supposedly new, I want it new. If I wanted a used one, I would have bought if off of craigslist. It would bother me every time I look at it.

BTW, Woodstock International is the official website for Shop Fox Brand so it might be worth calling their customer support number to see if they have an inventory on a replacement base. WSI is owned by Grizzly and is their retail line but perhaps they have a separate stash of parts for their distributors? If they do, you can call back the Grizzly CS people and see if they can work together. Of course it may the exact same CS people or they may be working from the same parts inventory data but it is still worth a try. .

Take the 50 dollars and move on.

I agree. Life is too precious to waste on this. Esp since you have it all set up and it's running well. Mail order is always a crap-shoot and you got full functionality and performance. Thats more than some purchasers have reported.

I took an offer like that once. I was never happy. If I buy a floor model with a scratch or dent, ok. But not a new tool. Like above, griz can do better, and at least $200 is a good starting point. I will never just accept a low-ball offer again. NEW IS NEW. NOT DAMAGED!

$50 is an insult! New machine, full cash refund or 15% off would be a minimum starting point. As mentioned, if/when it goes back, it'll be at least $200 off (likely more) in a scratch and dent sale, on top of Grizzly's additional costs assumed in shipping, handling and warehousing. At ~$400 off it would be closer to the break even point for them vs. you keeping it and having to look at the damage every time you use it for a paltry $50.

I d get angry every time I saw it. I ve always been happy with Grizzly CS, but $50 isn t nearly adequate compensation.

Since you are address me directly.

Well I guess we're all different. I'd be making saw dust with a perfectly capable machine while you're stressing out. They say stress in unhealthy.

Still looks like the crate got dropped during handling by a fork lift. I'd send it back. Reason is, everytime I'd see it I'd be a little disappointed. But It's your decision.

If do you keep it I'd build a new base for it out of Douglas Fir or a similar wood. This way you still have a nice looking piece of equipment.

Simple question really - did you get what you paid for?

Looks to me like you didn't. I buy damaged items all the time from Amazon Warehouse, but it reflects in the price and $50 off a $1,100 item certainly doesn't cut it.

Ask them how much would it cost to have them pick it up and ship it back to them. I am pretty certain it is going to be more than $50

And as others have pointed out, if they can't replace the stand, what happens down the road if you need another part?

I would return it

Federal Trade Commission law states that they must supply parts or at least availability to a company that can readily supply parts for 7 years. The FTC has some bite to them. If you can not get parts, simply tell them you are going to turn them in the FTC or your State's Attorney General. Importers like Grizzly are very subject to either of those.

I worked around a type of import industry for years. A store with the investment in bricks and Mortar like Grizzly should be receptive to that, if the CS isn't, ask to talk to management, they will be. My mother had a lift chair that broke every year…I got the answer that there weren't parts after 3 years once. In most bigger States there are a small office for the FTC in a Federal Bldg somewhere, I found out the agents name and acted as if we were friends. Miraculously, they were able to fix it, and continued to fix it, until my mother passed away a few years later. No parts is a common excuse that is not always true.
Even after 7 years, the companies sell the parts to one certain repair service…..most of the time they will tell you who that is to get you off their backs. Now make no mistake, those companies most of the time charge high prices for their exclusivity.

I agree 50.00 sounds low, but it may be a done deal now….if there is not a big dent, paint or I like Aj2's idea of a sticker or magnetic sticker too…..and while it might bother me for a while, at the end if the day, its a machine in workshop.

Wow. You guys are awesome. What a great bunch of well thought out responses. I wanted to let you all know what happened, as I too find it frustrating when threads like this are left unresolved. :) I went back and forth with Grizzly a couple of times and finally decided to settle on their offer of $100 credit. The bottom line for me is that the jointer works just fine. $100 makes me feel a little better and frankly, my time is worth way more than trying to package that sucker up and send it back. I have enough on my plate already. I'll touch up the paint and move on with my life. Also, I now get to add $100 to my savings towards a new planer. :)

Grizzly did a good job of staying in contact with me, which was good. What is not so good is that I agreed to the credit over a week ago and still haven't seen it hit my account. I called them today and they said they would process it. It sounds to me like somebody dropped the ball, but they didn't want to say it. I expect I will see the money in th bank soon.

On a tangential note, as a psychology major it was really interesting to see the wide array of responses to this dilemma. :) Thank you again for all the responses!
