I am planning to stain my old wood floor (built in 1989) and I'm trying to get it to match my new flooring. I got a matching stain for my unfinished red oak stairs, but I am not sure whether or not I'll be able to use the same stain for my old flooring. Please advice what species could this be based on the pictures I have.

If you compare the color, darkness, grain pattern of the individual boards of the floor, they are not the same. The species is oak, but there is no effort to match the pieces like a table top. You will no longer notice the variations a week after refinishing. Don't worry, be happy!

+1 for red oak. Whether you can get the stain to match the new red oak may depend upon whether you can get all of the old finish off. There is probably enough variability in the wood that it should work but you may want to test on a few pieces in closet or some place that is not real visible to see how it looks.

It is red oak and professional floor finishers can color it almost any color you want. I heard a few years ago that people were staining it grey...the new designer color at the time. The finisher told me he likes doing that because in a few years he gets called back to change it to the latest color. If you are doing all the floors in the pictures I would get a pro to do it. Well worth the extra $.
