I just noticed these tonight… a pair of threaded holes and a pair of non-threaded holes at the back of my Lee Valley Veritas low angle block plane. Wondering what they are for.

Ball and tail for the plane. I got mine, at least a decade ago, and Rob Lee was kind enough to supply my plane without indents machined into the sides (made for a much nicer appearance). Besides the ball and tail, I also have the chamfer attachment that replaces the adjustable toe. That attachment works nicely, but I've gotten very adept at doing chamfers free hand.
With the ball and tail, the plane works very nicely as an easy to handle small smoother. Though I don't use this plane much anymore, it is still one that I would not consider selling.

I dont think the tapped holes are for the ball and tail. I think that goes in the bald holes more to the right in the above image.

I tend to leave mine set up that way as I have the Veritas apron plane as well which tends to pick up most of my block plane duties.

Poor man's number 1 with low angle, bevel up. Free shipping at Lee Valley (Veritas) right now…..
Is that an earlier version? I have had that plane for about 15 years and the ball tail and front knob are different from yours. I like the regular tote on yours.They are for addition of a tote to be able to use your block plane like a small smoother.
