I am an amateur woodworker to say the least, but I have the opportunity to purchase a powermatic 66-ta saw. I have't seen it in person but It sounds like the guy just needs to get rid of it because he is moving. He is only asking $650 for it. Is this deal to good to be true or not. Also I do not currently have 220v outlet, but I know an electrician who can install it for me for $150. What do you think?

Replacing the motor with a 3 HP 220V single phase motor will run about $400.00 for the motor and parts (Ebay). Add another $150 if you need an electrician to do the re-wiring. If you know what you are doing you can re-use the existing 3 phase magnetic starter, but it needs to be re-wired as well (it has a single phase coil). Swapping the motor is a couple of hours of wrenching but not too bad, much easier if you take the table off and do it from above. While you are under the saw, take it apart and clean the rest of the moving parts as well.

At $650 for the saw, and the additional $$ to convert, it is still a good deal. I have a 1969 PM 66 that I did exactly this conversion to and I love the saw. While you are at it, get a nice rolling base as the saw is quite heavy.

A great price on the saw, too bad about the three phase. You could use a VFD to run the saw on single phase. Using VFD to mimic three phase derates the drive I believe by half, you will want to verify that. I run a milling machine this way, easier and cheaper than conversion to different motor in my case.

A pretty good deal…. probably the 3 phase is why it hasn't
been snapped up already 'cause people are intimidated
by phase conversion (it's not that complicated really).

Now that's a 5hp saw. It's a 66 and the 66 takes a
standard mount motor I believe.

You can run a 5hp motor using a 5hp static converter
(about $100) and it will be about 3.3hp real power,
which is plenty.

You can build a 7.5 hp rotary converter for about $300
using a used motor and a pre-made Phase-craft panel
of ebay.

You can run a VFD, which is maybe $200, minimum. They
are neat but electronic and may not hold up over the years
if dust gets in (it will). VFDs do cool tricks like speed
variation but you don't need any VFD tricks for a table
saw.

You can switch out the motor for a 3hp single phase
motor, about $350 new… $100 and up used. Like
I said earlier, the Powermatic takes a standard motor
mount so it's not hard to switch it out.

If it were me, I'd go with the static converter.

Why the hell can't these deals ever be near me, this thread wouldn't have even been made if this were within 100-150 miles of me.

There are actually lots of good deals on cabinet saws such as pm66 and unisaws found on CL and at auctions on a very regular basis. I don't see any deal as being once in a life time. But I will say the deal you posted was certainly better than the average deal.

That's a down right shame. I looked for months for one of those T 66 saws. My son told me to check out his father in laws shop. Said he had a 220v table saw he wanted to sell. My boy didn't know a thing about, make model or color, just that it was a 220v table saw. Turned out to be a Delta Unisaw with a Biesmeyer fence and a 52" table. The deal also included a shopfox sawduct vacumn. The whole deal came to $1000. It was practictally unused. The first owner traded it for a Harley. Well I dipped into my gun fund and brought it home. Boy was the wife P.O.d. I had to replace a few missing parts. The beauty of the whole deal was I didn't have drive 3-400 miles to pick it up. It only lacks left hand tilt. Prior to this I had an old 9" Rockwell contractor saw and had to use a clamp on the back rail to keep the fence from moving. Having good tools is a real blessing. I won't buy cheap quality anything again, especially tools. Sure hope you find a good saw soon. The improvement in what you turnout will be amazing!
