Isn't it time for a Mobile App?

I've been on this site for almost three years, and have loved every day. The projects, communication, advice, comradery, and skillshare had been invaluable to me as a woodworker and teacher.

That being said, isn't it about time that LJ Published a mobile app? Although I can access the site in a browser on my phone, a mobile app just seems like something that needs to happen.

Most of the pictures I take (as well as 100% of the pictures my students take) come straight from a smart phone, and using the website can be cumbersome, or result in wrongly oriented pictures. Also, when viewing the website in a browser on my Android, most of the posts and comments are difficult to read because of the layout.

I'm sure a mobile app would be much more beneficial to users, and although I can understand that some LJs may not have a iPhone or Android, there are many LJs who do. Heck, I'd even pay a couple bucks to purchase it if it made my life a little easier.

Thoughts?

Tooch, An app is a good idea. I would think it would be either a ton of work or a large outlay for the site owners to either create apps (always have to have at least IOS and Android, to cover all your bases) or contract someone to do it for them. Plus any ongoing maintenance.

I work in IT, and one of the tools our web services team uses is Responsive web design. It uses "CSS and HTML to resize, hide, shrink, enlarge, or move the content to make it look good on any screen" (quote from http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_responsive.asp) That may be more palatable to the site owners than creating and maintaining both iPhone and Android apps.

I also would pay for either choice.

Though I agree Tooch, I'm afraid your suggestion and posting falls upon deaf ears, believe me I know. That's one thing that I disapprove about this site is the lack of interaction between the forum staff and us.

I first brought this up over six years ago.

I do notice that the site formats better is a mobile browser but suspect that is because the browsers have improved.

I looked at that, the original forum, and noticed some of the same people even commented. I will say though, over the last six years a lot has changed. Think of not only the phones, but tablets as well. A mobile friendly version would not only reach a whole different group, but also keep them coming back.

I guess it won't change until there is a viable, comparable alternative, or LJ starts losing traffic because it that specifically.

Tooch, I agree a lot has changed as far as devices are concerned. I was just pointing out that this is a long-standing and frequent request (I have seen many other topics on it over the years) and tends to just be ignored.

The best solution I found was getting a tablet that has a high enough screen resolution to just use the site as-is. That doesn't help with my phone though, but the latest Chrome on Android actually reformats the page so that the poster info that we see on the left on a PC is actually a header above the post. This makes it a lot more readable on a small screen. I don't know if any other browsers or any iDevice does that.

It might be worth mentioning that Martin's new site that he created after leaving Lumberjocks says that it is written to automatically reformat on mobile devices, so it seems he was listening but saved that for something he started new, rather than going back and fixing this old one.
