Ive got several hundred board feet of oak and poplar thats covered under a structure. Its been stacked and stickered for probably a year and a half and i was looking at it the other day and saw small piles of wood dust. Im thinking its some sort of wood boring insect. How do i go about killing them?

Sounds like powder post beetles. You can treat with borate or take it to a kiln to be dried. The high heat of the kiln kills the beetles. Just be sure that you tell the kiln operator about the infestation. Whatever you do keep the wood away from all your other wood. Note that the beetles will also infest furniture, not just raw wood. Remember to fumigate the structure after you deal with the wood or you will never get rid of the problem.

The problem with powder post beetles is that they lay eggs inside the wood. Chemical treatments will generally not kill the eggs and when you've built furniture and its in the house and the eggs hatch, then you've got problems. Heat treatment is one effective way to kill the beetles, larva and eggs. Most documents I've seen indicate heating to 130-140 for 24 hours. An article at UGA if it's true powder post beetles you can treat by freezing to 0 degrees for 24 hours, migt be more practical if you have short boards and/or large freezer available…

Good Luck!

well crap! I was planning on using some of the lumber to build my wife a new dining room table , so cutting it up and freezing it wont be an option. it looks like the chemical treatment might be my only route. I bet if i got the lumber sprayed, and then sprayed again a little while later that may would kill the eggs .

Find somebody with a restraunt that has large walk-in freezer, put wood in there for a few days (use stickers between boards to allow cold air flow otherwise you'll need longer time to get wood in middle of stack down to 0 degrees…
