How I Sell My Woodworking Projects

In this video I answer one of the most common questions that I get from woodworkers: How do I sell my woodworking projects?

Watch The Business of Woodworking, How I Sell My Projects

In this video I share how I sell my work, but since this is just one point of view, I also interviewed 3 other woodworkers and I will release what they share in the next videos that follow.

Even though we are all woodworkers, we all build different things and have different experiences in selling our items. This will provide a lot more information and inspiration to anybody looking to sell their woodworking projects.

For those interested in reading woodworking business magazines I recommend WoodShop News and Cabinet Maker FDM. These magazines directly address the business of woodworking and manufacturing.

Stay tuned for the next 3 videos in this series where each woodworker shares information about their business which will inspire and inform others looking to sell their woodworking projects.

I liked it. Good idea of getting other woodworkers take on the selling of their woodwork. What you are doing is like me and my carving. I can not only carve the pieces but I can build what is need to be carved on and know building structure for anchoring pieces.

Thanks for watching Roger. I had been wanting to talk about how I sell my work, but with my roots being in the remodel/contractor industry, I figured that I also better get some other perspectives for the woodworkers to relate to.

I think the good news is that there is no single answer, there are many ways in which we build our reputations and sell our work. There is not a right or wrong answer, the answer to successfully selling is going to differ for each individual.

I always appreciated your work Roger and hold you in very high esteem. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

Good to have exposure to this kind of thing. I have done some one off sales but don't have the experience or confidence, yet, to get into full time selling. This sort of thing is a great help, Todd.

What a great video Todd. You cover ground that no one else ever does. There's no doubt you are good at what you do. And able to make a living at it, speaks bounds.

I've done similar work, dare I say for friends and family, but never enough to pay even the overhead let alone any kind of wage. But then again, I'm reticent to try and turn a hobby into a job. One point you made strikes home, and that is owning the project. You tell them what you will build, and they either accept or not.

By the way, 11 routers in the background, and I'm guessing that's not all you have. Hope you stop by next time you are in Bozeman. I've got a woodworking friend I met through LJ's that would surely enjoy meeting with you.

Joe - We just got back from a weekend in Bozeman and Ennis. We attended a wedding Saturday and spent the night and Sunday checking out Ennis. The event place out on Cobb Hill Rd seems to be a popular location for weddings.

I always wonder what you are up to when we roll through town, but we are usually headed to an event or on a mission so I haven't had the time to stop for a visit. I think I might have to come out specifically to visit with you and the other LJ member.

We stopped at the new location for Cello on Main St. A woodworking friend from here in Billings has some woodworking projects for sale in there and we had to check it out.

I think going to woodworking full time is not actually advisable for most people, but making a few extra $$ at it on the side is actually easy and the risk is fairly low. I recommend giving it a whirl.

You would be correct in your observation of my routers, I have 17 of them right now…yes… 17!

With 17 routers, you must have a favorite (or favorites). Which do you like best? Does it vary by task?

kajunkraft - You are correct, it depends on the task. My favorite, most often reached for router is the DeWalt 621, it has the smoothest plunge action and a nice edge guide. It is a powerful and smooth running machine with perfect depth setting.

My next favorite is the DeWalt 625 with the WoodRat plunge bar. Once again, I love the smooth-as-silk plunge action and the plunge bar is a sweet addition to this machine. This comes in second to the DeWalt 621 because it is a heavy router and takes a little more to handle.

My favorite palm router is the Porter Cable 310, I leave the most commonly used bits in them, they are all round overs 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4". This is a major time saver to leave the most common bits in the routers all of the time.

Porter Cable no longer produces the 310, this makes me very sad, it was one of the most simple and solid routers anybody ever made in the laminate trimmer category. All of the pro shops in town are still using them, they are pro-level machines.

One of my favorite newer model palm routers is the Bosch Colt. I like the way it grips and it has a nice fence. This is the key part: just as the PC 310 was solid in the way the base held the motor, the Bosch Colt is the same. In both models, the base wraps all the way around the motor and so there is no flex and tilting of the motor when in use. This means that once the bit depth is adjusted, the machine does not flex when in use changing the depth of the cut.

I hope this answers your question in a satisfactory manner:)

Hey Todd, I've talked to consignment stores in the past who have also wanted 50% commission. That is hard to swallow but if they can sell it for much more than I can I guess its worth it.

What are your thoughts on that? Isn't it tempting to try and sell it yourself by some other means (craigslist?) or is it just smarter business to focus your efforts on making furniture and let someone else sell for you?

Also, should I seek galleries vs. high end consignment stores? Can galleries sell for higher prices and thus a bigger pay of for you?

Mauricio - the bottom line is that it comes down to simple math. If what the stores or galleries can give you meets what you need to get out of it, then you just have to consider are you satisfied with that?

If what they can give you does not meet what you need to get, then you can also consider the production methods and if they can be improved. Or, in my case, my buddy and I decided not to make anything fancy or complicated, we made the most simple thing because it increases our profit margins. We have less time and material involved in them yet we are both capable of much greater work.

We are basically turning over the sales to someone that has a gallery style store that is a destination for people with deep pockets. As a business, they are carrying the overhead of the store, sales employees, and designers that are pushing our product.

I am not tempted in any way to try and sell the works on my own. I just don't have the time and I am willing to let the store take their cut to push the merchandise.

Stay tuned for the next video, the guy I interviewed talks a little bit about all the methods of selling his work. I am in the process of rendering it now. I usually upload at night while we sleep since it takes a few hours with our DSL internet.
