Dust Collection

I am starting the building of a new shop out in the country. It will be in the middle of our Pine Tree Farm. It will be 30x50. My question about dust collection is this. Is there any reason I have to have a collector like that is being sold everywhere with a 30-50 gallon container to hold the wood chips and dust. Why can’t I just stub out the dust pipe and turn it toward the ground. That way I can just move it into a compost pile when ever I want and not have to worry about taking out and emptying the container all of the time.

There are those who do just that. Couple of things to consider:

- Is your shop isolated from other inhabited buildings? Is there any issue with dust settling on stuff? There will be dust on everything near that spot. For me, my dedicated shop building is only about 25 feet from our house. If I dumped the sawdust outside, an unacceptable amount of it would find its way into the windows of our house.

- Climate control inside the shop building. If your DC exhausts to the outside, the air that is exhausted out of the building has to be replaced by air from outside the building. If you condition that air for part or all of the year, rapid exchanges of the air in the shop may impact the ability of your HVAC system to condition the workspace. My DC is capable of moving the volume of air in my shop in about 13 minutes. Since I live in a cold climate, my heating solution would be quickly overwhelmed by having to heat that new air that quickly.

Thanks guys. I did not think about the heating and cooling which I do want to do. As far as dust there is not one near us and the back end of the shop is about 100 yards from the house and the shop would be between the down pipe and the house. Thanks again I really appreciate the help.
