I have several 3" x 5" scrapers size +/- I managed to sharpen them the first time but since then I have not had much success. I have put them in a vise and filed them down and tried to redo them, just not satisfied with the results. I use them to flatten turned surfaces on my lathe, they work better for me than anything else. but I have them all dulled so that they are pretty much useless now. Yes I have followed the instructions, on how to sharpen, Any thoughts

check youtube. There are several good vids posted that walk you through the process.

As for mine, I just hit it with a file to remove any remaining burr, square the edge, then burnish to raise a burr. FWIW, I don't go through all the motions of using a whetstone, checking burnish angle, etc., etc. Maybe I should but I've done it so often now that it is almost second nature.

I use Bill's approach most of the time and have a Veritas card scraper sharpener, which does the job. I usually just touch it up when it starts to make dust with a burnisher and it goes back to making whispy little shavings.
