I doubt you'll make one cheaper than a harbor freight or wen can be bought.

 

Ditto on what Grant said but Izzy Swan made a simple Oscillating spindle sander a few years ago that might be worth a look. I seem to recall seeing some that use a windshield wiper motor to make it oscillate as well.

 

Concerned the cheaper units will just breal down…

 

The portable Wen has a two year warranty. I may just buy it and mount to a table top…

A simple oscillating sander may not be the best choice. The back-&-forth motion may cut grooves. Consider a random orbit sander instead.

 

I'm guessing the OP is talking about inside radii.

The portable OSS probably has a universal motor (noisy). The benchtop OSS usually has an induction motors (quiet).

The ideal sander is fast enough to get the job done quickly, and slow enough to keep you out of trouble…

Shopnotes issue 127 has a really simple box for DC for using the drill press. In the same article, they rigged up a foot pedal that uses a pulley and some rope or cable to move the spindle up and down. Kind of a funny idea but it might actually work.

 

My Delta edge sander has an adapter on the end roller that accepts different size spindles, although it doesn't oscillate. May be a quick/easy edition for your edge sander.

I just thought since you were talking about building your own, that it may have been an idea for you to retrofit what you have.

 

I'll take a look at it . Might work but not without a lot of thinking.

I have a floor model Grizzly and a handheld Porter Cable, I don't believe the Porter Cables are still available but there are some other handhelds out there. I've had a number of my students buy the Ridgid tabletop and they have been very happy with it.
