Which do you use, tapered or straight, and why? If it depends… on what?

When I am working with laminate and using confirmat screws, I like to use the longer tapered crews, to pre drill the hole, so the particle board does not crack.
Ooh- I haven’t tried those yet, that’s interesting. I’ll definitely get some tapered ones for that, then!

I don't use those, but if I did they would be straight. That's because I only use square drive screws, and they aren't tapered. But for the countersink I've taken to doing it with something like what's in the pic. Yep, it's 2 steps, but I'm a hobbyist and not in a hurry. View attachment 3919477
That makes sense. Being able to do both operations at once definitely appeals to me, but I’m wondering if that will feel less important once I get a proper table/fence built for my drill press that makes repeatable setups a little easier/more reliable.

I’ve tried many years ago but none worked well. Once I got the jackrabbit set, I never looked back. I’ve had my 2 sets for thirty years. I just sharpen them when needed but that’s not too often. I replace the little bits every now and then. Again, barely ever. These bits are amazing. The new ones that are made aren’t the same as my originals but they are okay. I have a set that the company gave me to test out. I believe my originals are better for my use but the new ones are just as nice for the function. Basically the same thing. I’d check out the website. Jackrabbit bits.
That’s quite the testimonial! Realistically I could probably be perfectly happy with a $9 set off amazon for more than long enough to get my money’s worth, but any prospect of a buy-once tool is too good to ignore. I’ll have a look!

Hmm- Is it Zackrabbit? Because I found this which definitely appeals, and the price seems fine considering all factors.

ZackRabbit Set

My one hesitation is, does anything about this make it unsuitable for use in a drill press? I’m not seeing anything, but I’m mindful of not knowing what I don’t know.
