I don't want to do it but I am going to start looking for a chuck for my lathe. I am new to this and don't know what the differences are. My lathe max length is 18" so i don't want one of the big thick chuks expense is also an issuei I saw a good deal on ebay almost bought them the realized it wa just add on jaws. I would go used if I could get a set that was not worn out.

Karda, I'll second the Nova G3. I like mine alot; but, I need to order a smaller jaw set for it. It comes with 50mm jaws, and I want the 25mm or 20mm jaws. Also, you will nedd to order the threaded insert for it to fit you lathe sindle threads. If you ever get another lathe with different spindle thread size, you can buy an new insert and use the same chuck. They even make an insert to fit a Shopsmith.

what diameter do you want/need ? don't know
3 or 4 jaw ? Not sure whats the difference
what is thread size 1" 8TPI
what make and model to fit ? central machines 10Ă—18 lathe

I will be using the chuck for bowls and short spindle work. Also i want jaws that can expand to tighten into a mortise as well as clamp on a tenon

You want a 4 jaw scroll chuck. The G3 will come with 2" (50mm) jaws and some also come with 1" jaws. You can buy other size jaws. There are insert type where you will need to buy a separate insert to fit your lathe. And there are some that are direct threaded for 1x8 spindles. The insert type are cheaper but the insert adds around $20 to the cost. There are other brands that are good, most people seem to like what they have, but I only own Nova chucks so that is all I can recommend.

This is a 3 jaw chuck, also a step jaw chuck, you do not want this for woodturning.

Most woodworking scroll chucks will come with one set of jaws and usually a woodworm screw standard. If you need additional jaws, you purchase them separately. Some chucks are sold as packages, with several (usually 4) jaw sets, such as the Barracuda 2 mentioned above - which are generally a better value than if you bought the chuck and jaw sets separately. The web page (Amazon) should tell you what jaw(s) it comes with.

Cheers,
Brad

Yup Nova G3 - can usually be had for aboit $100 or less on Amazon. Comes with a wormscrew too. Really a necessity for a lot of jobs on the lathe.

Mike, below is from the Jet link. The Nova 48202G3 for $89 is the best deal I've ever seen. I paid that back in 2009 when I first started for the same chuck. I've done other business with Jet. They were very fast on the delivery. ..... Jerry (In Tucson)
