I'm looking to build this table in Oak in this shade of Gray. Does anyone know whether the standard "Red Oak" that you can get at Home Depot could be reliably stained gray? Do I need to purchase a White Oak to start? (more expensive obviously). If anyone has any suggestions as to what stain might get me to the this shade of gray that would be much appreciated.

Thanks, I've used Transtint dye & a just about avery nmajor brand of stains water & oil base type. Never had any luck with grey color although I would give up quickly & move on. Finishing is my leaast devloped wood working skill. I like dyes as opposed to stain so I'll give that Genaral Finish product a try.

If you are going to try to "bleach" it first I would suggest using Oxalic acid. It is used to bleach out teak on boats for refinishing all the time and should be available at most big box stores. I'm not sure you will be able to duplicate the color shown on red oak or even white oak because the color will not be as uniformly absorbed by the grain. You would probably need to go to an opaque "stain" and if so I would suggest using a seal coat first to control the penetration. (A 2# cut of clear de-waxed shellac would due....Zinsser's seal coat)

As always with stain and finishes test first...then test again before making the final applications.
