I ordered the 24" X 2.5" Wood screw and nut with the brass garter and handle. I have the legs milled and cut to length but it just dawned on me I don't know how far down to set the screw and drill the hole. Is there a guide line to go by for how far down to go? I would think its at a level that would be easy to reach and turn without bending but I am not sure. I am only going to instal a leg vice for now. The bench will be 7' long and 34.5" high with mortise & tenon for the top to sit on/in and will not be fastened to the bench for now, the top is 3.5" thick and I may have a center board that can be turned around for a planing stop.

The Lake Erie screw is a great product, I love mine.

Really there is not 'right' answer. You want the screw pretty high to get more leverage against the parallel guide, but you also want some depth in the jaws.

If your top is, say, 3" thick, and the nut is another, say, 3" to the center line of the hole (going by memory here), the highest you can mount it would be 6" from the top surface of your bench. Lower still if you have a top stretcher on the leg assembly that the nut has to fit under.

You will loose depth in the jaw if you mount it too high, so you might not want it as high as possible. It's a trade off.
