Call a local Auctioneer to get an idea of the value and see how it sells in your location. Otherwise price it and list it on Craigs list.

 

Hello Eric - sorry for your loss.

It seems like you are in my neck of the woods based on your area code. Depending on what it is you are trying to sell, listing it locally on Craigslist or other local sites (like ocala-4-sale, gainesville-4-sale, clay electric buy/sell web page, etc…) would probably be best for anything large like machinery or wood, as they are rather difficult (and expensive) to ship. Hand tools and other items that can be shipped easier could as well, but also listed on places like e-bay for a larger audience. To get an idea of what things are worth, you can check those places mentioned for similar items, as well as post some pictures and descriptions for others to see, so they can offer some advice on a per item basis.

If you have a local classifieds that usually works well and has less spammers/scammers than craigslist.

 

If you were to post some pics and model numbers of the bigger stuff (table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, bandsaw, shaper, etc), I'm sure plenty of people here could offer opinions of what the stuff is worth. Your general location would be useful too. There could even be several people on this forum within driving distance that might be interested.

 

If you are trying to wring every last dollar then eBay and Craigslist. If you want it gone in one fell swoop, auctioneer. Pro tip, DO NOT sign any piece of paper from an auctioneer until you are 100% sure you want to use that auctioneer. Some of them are real slimeballs.

 

A woodworkers reality - for example an Amana router bit that I paid $75 for going for 25cents. This is reality, therefore the Bible says store your treasures in hevean- this is a better route than the resale of used woodworking tools. For example, i have approximately $50,000 in equiptment- all with memories- again who knows what the estate will sell it for.

Dont use an auction !
They have no clue what value is, just want to move it and take whatever commision they get.
I have bought lots of tools at Auction "REAL CHEAP" , sometime I feel guilty or sorry for person selling it,
Like one other person POSTED…...perhaps you can find some young woodworker that cannot afford new tools, help them out, IF they are truly interested !

 

You could also try an estate sale. You can sometimes get better prices than you would get selling online or in a garage sale. if you advertise it with tools, people will drive 50 miles to come check it out and will be lined up to get first crack at it. Where I live, you can usually get a decent price the first day of the sale if you have good tools in good condition. One the first day, ask a little more than the going craigslist prices and put up a sign that it will be 25% cheaper the next day. That cuts down on people trying to negotiate a lower price and gets them to come back the next day if you were just a little out of their price range.

I would post all of it on eBay. go to post office and get a small, medium and large Priority Mail boxes. What fits in those, sell on eBay and charge box price for shipping. Use eBay sold listings to get an idea for pricing. for items to big to mail, list as 'Local Pickup Only.' as asked earlier, do you want to make a few $$ or just make all the stuff go away.
This site has a section called 'Woodworking Trade and Swap.' you could post stuff there.

 

If there is a woodworkers guild or club in your area you could ask them for help in determining value. A check with a Rockler or Woodcraft in your area may get you information on groups in your area.

 

I don't know of anyone who buys or even looks for stationary tools on eBay. I know lots of people who buy and sell stuff on Craigslist. I have been very successful both ways. The problem is going to be setting the price. You will need somebody who knows tools to help with that. Why not post a list here?

Tons of large equipment is bought and sold on ebay. It's just not typical for hobbyists to do so because freight is expensive if they have to deliver a palletized tool to a residential address.
