wheel is stuck on grinder

I'm attempting to remove and replace the right side grinder wheel on my Delta 6 inch grinder, but the nut that retains the wheel is very tight. I've tried to hold the right side wheel and loosen the nut, but as I use a wrench on the retaining nut my fingers are not strong enough to keep the wheel from moving. Also tried holding the left side wheel with the same result.

I think I need some mechanical advantage to keep the wheel (and, of course, the motor shaft) stationary. But I am concerned that if I try to restrain either wheel with a pliers, or channel-lock, or something similar that I will crack, or somehow damage, the wheel. And I want to keep that grinding wheel for future use.

Am I right to be concerned about grabbing either wheel with a tool? I sure don't want to cause some unseen damage and then have the wheel destroy itself the next time I reinstall and use it.

Any ideas? Not sure how to proceed.

Since the wheel is spinning counter clockwise when viewed from the right side, the nut and shaft should be right hand thread, as that would tend to tighten the nut when the grinder ran up to speed.

Put a box end wrench on the nut and hold the wheel stationary with a rag. Give the wrench a smart rap with a rubber hammer. Might take a couple of tries. That's a poor man's impact wrench.

On those two ended motor grinder things, the direction is always the same regardless of side - so to loosen a side, insert wrench on arbor nut from front of machine, and then press down on wrench. Don't matter which side you are working on. You can wedge something between the wheel or put a second wrench on the other side to prevent things from moving. Poor mans impact wrench should work every time.

Cheers,
