I would love to hear your ideas on things we can do to improve LumberJocks.com for you.

What things do you love?

What things are you not so crazy about?

Are there features you would love to see added or fine-tuned?

I do not mind seeing the ads, after all it is how you make money and sustain this site. The problem I have are the ads that have sound and prevent you from turning the sound off. This particular ad has gotten so bad that I prefer not to visit LJ anymore as I have to listen to their stupid music all the time.

This is the dumb ad that keeps popping up. If this continues like this then I think I will remove LJ from my tool bar and will have to look for another forum where I am able to turn off ad sounds.

Not to mention the fact that many of the ads appearing in LJ seem to be of a suspicious nature and are blocked by McAfee….

i don't think deleting or ending a thread is a good idea… this is a knowledge base.
While I have wanted to delete my own too, you have to realize that if someone deletes it, the value is reduced to others who might find it valuable.

That being said, if we had a place to buy sell, if it's sold, it should not dispaly any longer as available. But it should still remain because someone might want to look up what something was selling for, or ask someone how to price something.

I am a person of simple needs, the only other thing I would like to have is the capability to un flag threads I have visited before, some of them by mistake. For example there is a thread called "Furniture makers forum." I thought it would be interesting and clicked on it. Turns out it was started by a guy who blocked me (don't eve know why, I guess he must be pretty thin skinned). So now I am stuck seeing "Furniture makers forum has 213 new answers." Who cares?!? The thread is lame ( I do not need to see boxes and square furniture anymore) and I cannot participate. Is there any way to un watch this thread? and remove how many "new" messages it has?

Of course the ideal would be that you would not see the threads started by people who blocked you. I can do without the jackasses and religious types…know what I mean?

It does not work fatandy…all it does is remove the little eye from the side, but every time someone makes a new post on the thread I get to see in the pulse page "blah, blah, blah thread has 1459078088473 new post" If I stopped reading it a fourteen billion messages ago, I think I should be able to remove that "notice".

What is even worse is the "traffic accident" behavior. Like with this "furniture making forum" I see it has 60 new messages, so I can't help it but click on it….and sure enough same old square furniture and guys shooting the sh!t…...I wish I could stop doing that….hahahaha.. :)

Something that has always been on my mind for a change would be to show the LASTEST comment FIRST instead of having to read all of the older ones FIRST.
It's always seemed backwards to me.. but that's just my opinion.
This would be really easy to do with indexing…. or as an option for the viewer to select
how the comments are displayed.. ascending or descending.. Just a thought..

I kinda view LumberJocks as primarily, and most importantly, as a social networking site.

It is the will of the users that use this site for technology transfer, knowledge sharing. Most of us work alone or isolated, or just busy and this place offer us a place to spread the knowledge that we had to glean ourselves. A resource that most of wish (as newbies) had been there a over a decade ago. But this is not set up as a "Knowledge Sharing" website… it is set up as a validation tool… to show ourselves off and speak our stories. The advertisers get to ride the backs of our social interactions… the informative.. and the unfortunate dramatic ones as well. SO I like the idea of a "Like" button…. and a "Helpful" button. I would not offer any chance for people to demean, the "flag" button is fine for me.

Having a like or helpful button, can also create a optional searching ability, to find what has been the most helpful forum threads and more importantly helpful posts. Have you tried to find actual information from within a thread yet?

One forum I belong to has a very nice feature. Let's say I'm reading a post about any topic, down at the bottom of the screen, related topics are linked.

1 more vote for real date posted, instead of how many days ago.

There used to be stickies here. Questions repeatedly asked. I thought they were handy.

I'd like to search Shops by location. I'd like to see who is near me.

I'd rather see someone Like my project over not commenting. We all appreciate feedback on our work, whether it's praise or criticism. 300 views and no comments speaks volumes to me. Someone commenting or asking a question has many times been the first step in making a new Buddy here for me.

Look at the Lumberjock's home page. It says Woodworking Showcase. It's about showing your work, seeing the work of others and talking about it.

iwud, you mean the voice command doesn't work for you? Try hollering really loud into your speaker… that's what I do. Make sure it's plugged in and turned up to full volume.

Jorge, I don't know why every topic you visit is being added to your watch list. The only topics added to my watch list are those I have started or those I have intentionally added. It may be something with your settings.

I know it was pointed out that you can see the # of new posts on the Pulse page but I'd still like to have them in the forum view like every other forum. The trouble is ALL posts: blogs, projects, and forum; show up on the Pulse page but maybe I just want to see what's new in the woodturning forum or joinery forum.

If it's already possible to do this on the pulse page then it shouldn't be too difficult to do it in forum view.

A few people have requested a quote function and I may have too at some point but after some pondering, it's a bad idea. On forums that have a quote button it seems half the text in threads are people quoting paragraphs of text to say, "good job!" or "I agree!" and that gets annoying fast (that's where a "like" button works). A block quote function would be fine if all it does is add the tags, requiring you to copy and paste what you want to quote.
