I would love to hear your ideas on things we can do to improve LumberJocks.com for you.

What things do you love?

What things are you not so crazy about?

Are there features you would love to see added or fine-tuned?

First, allow me to say that the LJ community is fantastic and I'm honored to be a part of it. Thanks to all for making this site possible. I have a suggestion that might add some value by helping subscribers in their searches for various project ideas. When we post projects we are able to add metadata in the form of check boxes that relate to the type of project - bench, chair, table, desk, etc, etc, etc…. I receive RSS feeds of all projects but, none are listed by project type and I have no way to sort projects so that I can prioritize my time. I'm not interested in most projects that aren't furniture but, without the ability to sort, I can't place those projects at the front of the rss feed. This might be a bridge too far and maybe a bit picky! I'd love to be able to choose which types of projects I want to see. Anyway, I think the site is great as is!!! Thanks again.

Better navigation of forum comments. If there are, say, 4 new messages in a forum topic, I have to click the forum topic, then either click 4 New (which adds another page load, requiring two Back clicks to get to the index), or scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see the new comments. The forum index page should allow you to click on, e.g., "4 New" and then take you directly to the new comments.

It would be handy to be able to include a pic or video in a private message.

+1 on:

Follow a blog
Search within a thread/topic
Organize favorites
Redo the top 3
Like button so we can click that the project is good without typing a message. This may help top 3.

please excuse my fervor on this subject but I totally disagree with a Like button ,I feel a like button will destroy the amount of real comments projects will get, anyone can click on a like button, what does that mean. To me it means someone is to lazy to comment or tell a person what they made or like about what they made. Sure some times all I say is "great job"but even that is better then "LIKE" in my opinion.

A spellchecker would be very nice too as I have parkinsons, and need to go over my posts quite a bit to get them to a level where I can read them myself LOL .I realise this is not a problem for everyone so maybe not after some though.I don't want to be greedy.Alistair

I agree with a lot of previous post.
following a blog series especially.
a quicker way to upload photos would be nice as well.

and this probably goes along with the mobile app, but I would like to be able to see the thread title without scrolling all the way to the top.

I'd like to get rid of the "off topic content. Click to see post" thing in the topics list. Just show the post like all the others.

Also, in the topic view it shows the title and the first bit of the first post. It'd be nice to instead see the most recent unread… on some, like the Stumpynubs thread, it's drifted WAY beyond the topic of the first post.

A map of LJ's would be helpful locating others nearby - to split a load of lumber for sale, to get together and look at each other's work, to do joint projects.

Also, there needs to be some mechanism to encourage less experienced woodworkers (in which group I include myself). A mentoring mechanism would be nice. Those willing to mentor would add themselves and indicate how many they would be willing to mentor. Those looking for a mentor would then be able to look over the list of the willing and ask for help. Having accepted an invitation to mentor, the "mentor" would get a notice every time the "novice" posts a project or starts a new thread. That's not very much, and maybe there could be more to it than that, but it should probably not be much - or nobody would volunteer! Of course, getting rid of pests or dropping unhelpful mentors is an awkward thing to work out. Oh, never mind. :) Perhaps the buddy thing covers it well enough.

Both of these suggestions relate to building connections between people.

I don't understand the complaints about "block". To avoid hurt feelings, maybe all that's needed is to make "block" invisible. If one LJ block's another, the blocker would simply not see the blocked person's posts or threads initiated by the blocked person. There is no reason anybody has know. I've never blocked anybody on LJ nor have I noticed if anybody blocked anybody else, but I have been on more intense forums (fora?) where blocking was useful.

I feel like I need to ad my two cents about blocking,I feel blocking is a valuable tool. Many times I've seen two or more members get into flame wars on someones post who has nothing to do with the original person who started the thread. In cases like this when it's my post I block all of the offenders and in the future I may or may not unblock them. Because I do this some folks scream that their freedom of speech is being violated by myself or Ljs but since LJs or myself does not represent the government their claim is unwarranted. I've also had an individual Pm me as many as 20 times a day with unwanted messages that the only way to stop was to block him and even then he started sending me PMs through homerefurbers, with out having blocking available this person might still be stocking me.

I would like to be able to click on a post within my or others activity history and be directed to that post. I want to see Widdle's leg vise installation, to be more specific, which is not included in a project or blog.

Just an example, but making individual posts searchable via a poster's activity history seems like a great way to see old posts when needed.

I would like to see the ads that are linked to our posts be eliminated. I understand the need for ads, but a posters words should not be altered to include links to ads.

I would also like to see the actual title posted for off topic threads.

There should also be a way to flag the profile page of someone who is an obvious spammer.
