I would love to hear your ideas on things we can do to improve LumberJocks.com for you.

What things do you love?

What things are you not so crazy about?

Are there features you would love to see added or fine-tuned?

Thanks for asking
I would like to be able to organize favorites .

I would also like it if you could return to were left we off on a post if you follow a link. Many threads that have a lot of post there are buttons for the next 15 post so after viewing two or three of these extension buttons with 15 more post, if you follow a link and come back you have to start at the top of the thread and keep extending it until you get where you left off before going to the link.

I also think it would be a good idea to have a flag button on the original post not just the comments. That way if there's something way out there in the post (Like porn etc.)it could be reported quickly and with little effort.

It would be great if we could send photos in PMs too.

Ability to search for posts within a specific thread.

Change the "time since last post" to show the actual time on the clock that the last post was made. Additionally, who the most recent poster was. This makes it much easier to scan threads from the main forum page.

Add a button to send a PM directly from someone's avatar, rather than having to go through their profile page.

No matter what features you add to the website itself, it won't mean a thing until you do something about the server the pages sit on.

I routinely access LJ from 3 different physical sites with 3 different internet providers. LJ sucks at all 3 locations so I blame whoever is doing your web hosting. Problems include minutes (MINUTES! on a 20 Mbps line) delay in loading pages, scrambled posts using your posting tool and again, minute delays while posting before the posting tool closes.

  1. The formatting tags and quick pop-down reference are much than on most sites, but a WYSIWYG editor would be nice.
  2. Ability to directly upload videos.
  3. Ability to insert pictures from imgur (similar to the feature to add from photobucket)
  4. Ability to group favorites and filter by tag(s)

Karen, if you're using your computer don't forget that you can use the Home/End keys on your keyboard to skip to the top and bottom of the page. The links would be nice for mobile devices though.

Case in point - I made the above post, went back to edit a couple of minor spelling corrections and your little horizontal barber pole is still spinning after 8 minutes!

One again, I see this behavior at 3 different physical sites with 3 different internet service providers and using either Chrome or Firefox.

My list, of which some have already been mentioned

Another vote on following a blog series
Another vote for organizing favorites
Easier to find reviews. You can search by tool or brand, but not narrow it down from there, which leaves too many to find reviews on a specific tool easily.

Finally, and you might not want me to go there, but there needs to be a revamp of the Top 3. I find it odd that simple shop jigs routinely beat out beautiful projects for honors simply because of the number of times favorited. I favorite things I might want to build (and good jigs/shop aids are useful to a lot of people) but would like to see a way to honor projects that are well done, but not favorited because I don't have any interest in building it later, either from skill level or woodworking focus.

Fix the search Lumberjocks.com button.

Scott, A small, free program called Infraview will do that for you before you post them.

LJs comes up quickly for me. But, it takes an inordinate amount of time for the page to refresh after posting to some threads.

I'm happy with the criteria for the Top 3 the way it is. But, maybe a Top3 +7 more? Or a Top 3 by broad category?

A few thoughts on my end and another suggestion:
  • Search (I agree) - Fix used to give you a forum specific search, where you could separate the results by category/type (project, review, forum, blog). I have found it rather frustrating to not be able to refine my search by category/type
  • Mobile App (Maybe?) - Not to go into a wonderful(ly painful) debate about iOS vs, Android, an simplier (and faster) compromise might be to consider (at least) mobile-friendly version of the LJ website.
  • Watch - Clear all watches (checkbox style), or at least let us know what watches are for items that have exceeded the 30 day window.

Gene, I was thinking for others, not myself :)

The site probably has the ability through whatever image library it's using as it's already generating the thumbnail images.

I'm not sure what kind of problem you're having EEngineer, but it works fine for me in multiple locations ( through multiple providers, at work and at home ).

I mentioned this in a forum post a few weeks back but I would like to be able to navigate within a blog series at the bottom of the post. As it is you read through the post, then to get to the next post you have to scroll back to the top of the page before you can get to the next post.
