Please be patient while they work on alternatives for the time displayed in threads. If it doesn't work the way we expect or need it to, they may need to revert back to the old system of showing time.

I just noticed the FaceBook timestamp…

Maybe it could be ADDED ON to this New Change… to satisfy Everyone! (???)

FB = very similar to Old way, but better… IMHO…

Cricket, by that time, maybe we will have boiled it down to what we REALLY want… LOL

LOLOLOL!

What we want and what we get are often two different things. (grin)

We currently have this…
09-04-2014 03:33 PM

I am expecting a compromise like this…
Sep 04-14 03:33 PM

Or this…
Sep 04-2014 03:33 PM

Or this…
Sep 04 2014 03:33 PM

Ugh, why were people complaining about the old way, it was so simple and easy … the # of days since a post. I really preferred the way it was. And of all the things that would actually improve functionality of the site (like search improvements, mobile friendly, actually being able to jump directly to the latest post from the forum view) why bother what weren't broke.

Am I unique in not actually knowing what today's date is?

The day of the week means something to me - not much, but a bit - the breadman comes on Tuesday and Saturday.
But the actual numerical date really doesn't.

Once in a while I go through all the projects I haven't seen yet. At the top of the project I'm looking at right now it says "posted 09-02-2014 05:38 PM".
OK - I know it's september - but I have to consult a calendar to find out where exactly the second of the month is/was in relation to today.

I was a proponent of "absolute date".
But if the choice is either "absolute date everywhere" or "delta days everywhere", I much prefer "delta days everywhere" - by a long long long long way!

If my idea of "absolute if it's old, otherwise delta" doesn't meet with approval, perhaps we could make both available - display delta days, and if you hover the mouse over that delta day, a little pop up shows absolute date - like the little "help" pop-ups?

+1 with Knicknack.
Since i am retired, I have to check what is the present day date. On a windows PC, it is written in the corner of the screen in European format to which I accustomed. On my android tablet, it is not visible.
Having the month in 3 letters format is necessary for all of us outside USA.
I am also not at all accustomed to use time in am/pm format in writing; this needs extra processing also. Please use 24h format; it will save 2 characters.
That being said, I prefer the time elapsed as it was before, at least for periods up to 90 days. For longer periods, "n month ago", "last year"....."n year ago" is good enough.

On 9/6/2014 9:04pn saw the following listing:

Can I pay you to set up my jointer?

09-07-2014 12:29 AM by JonHitThingWithRock in Power Tools, Hardware and Accessories

7 hours, 7 long stupid ridiculous hours now. I've been slaving away at …

Notice the time and date of the posting vs my local date and time (EST).

Aside from the desirability of this method - I think it should at least display the same date/time for the same thing in different parts of the site…

The projects page…

The page for the project itself…

(The ~1pm version is correct, by the way)

The time stamps are a bit confusing. It would make sense to add a setting to the individual user profile for time zone, then calculate the time displayed based on an offset of GMT (other forum software packages I have worked with do this). Users would have to make a one-time setting in their profile, but once done the time and date would always be correct to their location.

It would also be easy to add a date format setting to the user profile so users could determine how dates would be displayed on their device (e.g. I prefer the date format used by the US Military where September 13, 2014 is shown as 13 Sep 14).

the old way was just fine
what difference does it make what day and minuet
some thing was posted
when all they are asking is what saw to buy

every now and then someone hits an old post
and comments
the links talked about or tools
are long discontinued or aren't sold anymore

2 years ago 6 months ago last week 4days ago
that i can understand

but for the purists out there

why not list everything in roman numerals

I know there are a lot of opinions on this issue.

I've noticed over the past several days that a lot of people, including me, have replied to 4-5 year old threads without realizing that they are old. I don't remember this from before. I wonder if the timestamp has anything to do with it.

Sort of like analog vs. digital. Digital is more precise, but analog is easier to read at a glance.

The Old way, at times, is very hard to work with… Like, last post was 1300 days ago… That's a long time… How long is it? Let's divide 1300 by 365 to get Years, etc. etc. I has always irked me a little at the time… so I just ignored it!

With the New way, it's very simple to quickly do a simple subtraction of 2 digit numbers to get a very close idea of how long ago it was… etc.

Facebook has a date/time stamp… starting with Seconds ago, then going to Minutes ago, then Hours ago, then days ago, then, at some point they just display the Last full Date of last activity…

To me, it covers the bases that is the objective to easily SEE how long ago it was…

What is wrong with this approach?
