Three days now, the same spammer with his hundred lines of links. It would seem there should be a way to script a warning about his posts so he could be found and blocked sooner.

The point of these posts is usually not to get you to click the link. It is all about having many links to a site so that the search result algorithms will place that site higher in the returned rankings. I am not sure if a brute force method like this really works, but here it is!

The SPAM issue has been a perennial problem on LJ for far too many years. There's really only two explanations for this:

1) The corporate suits don't care enough about the problem to commit sufficient resources to end it, i.e., the inconvenience and frustration to LJ members hasn't been enough to hurt their bottom line, so they don't give a rat's patootie.

2) The person in charge of preventing this crap in the first place isn't capable of doing so, or isn't given the tools to do so (see #1).

I'm active on quite a few other forums, and the level of SPAM on those forums is minuscule by comparison-nonexistent in some cases. As long as LJ members find this sort of whac-a-mole SPAM acceptable, it will never end.

Real spam is worse than electronic. I ignore it as well. It was disgusting on camping trips in the 60 s, and I am sure it has not improved!!!

Theres the programmatic solution!

If too many users, say ten, block a user in too short of a time, say an hour, then the user account is locked until admin alert &review. Voila, c est solve!

Mm2, the problem is apathy... knew I had to get dragged into my phobia!

If enough people corrected/enlightened sideways posters we'd see the end of sideways pictures… Unfortunately, too many people are apathetic and persevere, letting their brains pour out of either their right or left ear.
