FWIW:
Biggest problem with the latest 'TED' Spammers is how they do it:
1) They create a log in.
2) A special script posts spam into a random list of threads using the 1000 latest thread numbers as reference list.
Script waits just long enough between posts to avoid alerting admin for too many messages in short period.
3) Another thread takes the list of names collected during spam run, and send each and every one a PM.
The mass spam helps the newbie meet the forum requirements for: minimum number of posts, during a reasonable period of time; that enables them to send PM. Boom mass email!
There are many things admin can do to reduce spam, but the trade off is always some type of inconvenience for the valid new user. LJ already has several things turned on to reduce spam.
These go along way to reducing spam; but it hard to stop any truly dedicated spammer.
Yes, that is how spamming forums works….. DAMHIK
OK, one hint:
There are 'kiddie' scripts written by hackers posted on various hacking forums for just about every brand and version of popular Forum Software in use on WWW. It is a badge of honor to be first hacker to post scripts or 'how to' documents every time a popular forum changes it's security settings, membership requirements, and/or latest version software.
I don't dare post any links as proof. If you attempt to visit most hacking sites without using TOR browser, VPN, and/or some other protection to hide your identity; your home network becomes an instant target by simply surfing the sites.
Hacking curiosity will kill the unprotected cat. :-0)
Be safe, not sorry.
