Blocking has never improved behavior. Blocking is a toothless, mangy hound. Just PM the offending person and work it out. Be a man. Don't count on others to help you make a decision.

Why not do the same with people who irritate our brain?

Anyway, I appear not to have any support for my idea here.

Approximately half of the people who responded above made it onto my block list. Since we don't have this feature, you will never know (and probably don't care) which half.

Now, if only the block button would make the blocked person's topics and posts disappear as well…

If we blocked out everyone and everything that bothers us, we'd probably spend a lot of time alone! I have never blocked anyone. I don't see the need. If there's someone that I don't agree with or have a problem with, I just ignore them. Too many more important things in life!

 

Sadly, blocking has a big stigma attached to it; as if it were a restraining order from a court or something.

I'm just wishing all forums had a notion of "filtering". Blocking here and on most forums doesn't actually provide that, so my point was moot to start off with. Blocking tends to be implemented in such a way as to take away tools a troll might use to bully someone. Cool, that's needed. Not really about filtering to further improve the average experience one has on the site.

Only show me stuff I like. Filter out topics/posts by people I wouldn't choose to have dinner with. What's the harm in that? And while we're at it, don't annoy other people who don't like me with the stuff I post here. I'm cool with that.

Anyway, I enjoy the wit and wisdom of the vast majority of the folks here, so I'll just bite my tongue and continue to filter the old fashioned way (as suggested…several times…by doing my best to ignore the few people I find to be unpleasant ).

DKV knows you can't PM someone who has blocked you.

 

I have worked at many jobs that started out the first day with someone telling me "Oh that Jane Doe over there is a real bitch. I'd steer clear of her" ... or … "Yeah, that guy Jim Doe is an azzhole. He will stab you in the back in a heartbeat"

So I'd just listen to all their "OPINIONS" and then I'd interact and talk with these folks as a normal course of day.

Sometimes I would realize that Jane Doe really IS a bitch and after a while I'd just ignore her snide comments and usually avoid spending much time with her.

Surprisingly enough, MOST times I'd find out that Jim Doe was NOT such a bad guy, and he would often times become a real asset to my team!

Didn't take me long to realize that I was the only one who could decide if I wanted to associate with someone or not. I decided to NOT take everyone else's OPINION and make my own opinion.

 

I have used blocking on another website because that person, blocked was posting stupid replies. It's the same thing as blocking spam E-mails. I don't want to deal with them ever.

Blocking doesn't solve problems it just hide them. Blocking is for people who can't deal with the ups and downs of life.

 

It's really hard to block someone…they can keep coming back as someone else.

 

Blocking would not be necessary if the topics did not stray away from Wood Working. I don't care what site you are on, or the education level of the group, when certain topics are discussed, panties will end up in a wad.

If anyone thinks their view point on a sensitive issue is the only possible scenario, think again. Or just wait 30 minutes and you will have multiple responses that offer a different take, and no doubt, there will be at least one that you find obnoxious.

I come to LJ's everyday to enjoy the incredible projects that get posted, and maybe learn a trick or two. All for my relaxation and enjoyment. Personally I can not even begin to comprehend why anyone would want to discuss politics or religion on a wood working site. I would guess the NRA has several forums, and I would bet the responses to similar posts would result in the same ruffled feathers.

So maybe instead of blocking people, stick to woodworking on the site.

AND now I fully expect a verbal tirade directed at me because I am sure someone out there thinks I am trying to take away their freedom of speech by suggesting a woodworking site be about woodworking.

Hi Gary. Well said and there is some truth to this.

OTHO, this suggestion of mine actually grew out of a decision to block someone who provided a mildly snarky response to a woodworking topic I posted a response to. I was on the tail end of an unusually unpleasant work-day, and simply wasn't in the mood to put up with an a-hole.

Some people are simply unpleasant to have around. They are thus regardless of the topic.

Most people have a bad day now and then and can temporarily appear to be one of the above.

My hope was for a quick way to tell them apart. In the end though, it doesn't matter because one can't "hide" all topics and responses by those who have been blocked…another feature request for another day.

BTW, I'm probably not alone when I say I'm a bit surprised this topic hasn't faded away yet. Perhaps just because anything connected to "blocking" is associated with other more incendiary situations than this one.
