Deforestation… I'm guilty!

Boys and Girls,
Before you start banging drums and shouting " foul… stick to the rules"… let this C19 pandemic suffragette wallow in his senility.
While many may argue that this topic has nothing to do with woodworking, let me clarify and enlighten you.
I'm not much of a green thumb, in fact I'm a failure at even growing weeds… years ago I asked the missus ,"What kind of a tree that was in the back yard?". She informed me that it was not a "tree" but an "overgrown weed".
Extrapolating that statement, weeds grow in lawns so cutting the lawn is my contribution to deforestation which has a lot to do with woodworking… follow the bouncing ball… lawn → weed → tree → forest → timber → woodworking… QED!

Recently I upgraded my tractor
Image

to this zero turn ride-on.
Image
RY48ZTR100.

The primary reason was due to me not using it on a regular basis and with the shelf life of modern petrol, I was always getting my carbies cleaned. While you can add additives to petrol to lengthen the shelf life, it still has a limit and eventually manages to clag up the works with little effort (or lack tere of) from me. That exacerbated by battery issues, that refused to recharge, I decided to investigate battery powered mowers (DOH!).

Prior to that decision, I purchased one of these cordless mowers,
Image

(and got rid of my hand mower as it never existed) to get at the spots the tractor could not get to and using the brush cutter left me with bleeding (literally) shins from flung stones (I don't own long pants… ********************, I'm a bloody duck).

I initially assumed the RZT (Ryobi Zero-Turn) would use the same 36V batteries my cordless gardening tools used. I sat on one in Bunnings and was informed it doesn't use 36V batteries but a built-in rechargeable one… Too bloody late, I could already picture me riding down my wide nature strip with my flowing, receding hair fluttering in the breeze while I was eradicating that potential new growth forest.

I planned to do a review, however, we've had nothing but C19 issues and ******************** weather over the last couple of months, so I haven't had a chance to evaluate and pen a proper review.

For the benefit of remote family and friends, I made a video of first impressions and me trying, and it was trying, to learn to drive it with those stupid lever control, convincing one and all of my insanity, which was my attempt to give hints to any illogical discrepancies in my formal Will, when it eventuates.

For anyone sick of reading this, you can have a look at how not to steer a RZT.

Hopefully with a sober moment and clear skies, I will eventually turn the blades on,
Image

shoot an evaluation video and maybe confront the purists here at LJ by posting a ride-on mower review.

PS. If I ever get pinched for DUI, I can always remove the blades to convert it into an ATV and drive down the pub for my cheap vino casks.

Be careful Ducky driving your new ATV intoxicated.
In the mid1970's a sailor from the ship I was on decided to ride his bicycle home from the pub one night.
He was somewhat unsteady but alert enough to stop at the red stop lights when he saw the blue flashing lights behind him. The police car came right up beside him but he'd forgotten to take his feet off the pedals and promptly fell across the bonnet of the police car. The very unimpressed copper made him walk the bicycle home after checking his ID and saw he was Navy.

I don't quite know how the constabulary would view an intoxicated old duck, opps, ducky driving an modified lawn mower home from the pub???

Thanks Dutchy, it'll be interesting when I actually engage the blades… Hope they'll work well as the tractor is gone… Maybe that one could've mowed Dutchland… you should've put in a bid and become a national hero.

Hi Alex.I have never seen an electric or a battery powered tractor over here. Can you push it if the battery runs down and you are the far end of the estate? I like Ryobi tools so that should serve you well!. I see it has a place for 2 cans of beer. But you'll have to stop to drink them as you need both hands on the levers. Or you can be drinking one and traveling is s circle with the one lever driving!!

Cheers, Jim

It can be pushed JJ, even with me sitting on it… the missus is pretty strong.. that's why 2 cans… one is reserved for her… but only after the push. The battery has about 3 hour capacity and with the old tractor I could do all the weeds in about 20 minutes at cruising pace so I don't think the missus will be over worked.

When it comes to beer (actiually drinks… cheap vino not in cans), can be driven one hand, but a bugger to turn one handed and subject to alcohol spillage… have only mastered the straight line turn so far. After the "tractor", steering is one helluva learning curve… luckily it has two speed ratios and I'm yet to graduate from the lower scale… still coming to grips with trying to keep a straight line which is actually easier with the single hand straddle grip than using both hands… However, a slight unplanned move of the hand can send it into a spin and unfortunately when I start to lose control I "panic" and the brain takes over and starts steering the "logical" way which is opposite to the correct way with this beast… furtunately the chassis is metal and has already chipped brick… but no seat belts.

I might have to barricade the street, at least the footpath, when I get the courage, weather and sobriety to gather the guts to engage the blades. Fortunately it does make a sound so you know the blades are spinning…
Must admit the ATV option is appealing to me at my age… for driving down the pub… not that I can't walk, but with age comes the mastery of the art of laziness… and I'm a black belt in that.

Love the LED lights on the front… Might plan a roo hunt at night without the blades… the buggers wouldn't hear me sneak up!

Thanks for sharing the video Alex! I had a wonderful laugh before breakfast… I think it's going to rain today so no lawnmowing for me with my Black & Decker battery-powered walk behind mower (I have almost no yard at all here at the house - Thank God! - and I pay a guy to do the lawn at the store!)

Recently I upgraded my tractor

to this zero turn ride-on.

(and got rid of my hand mower as it never existed) to get at the spots the tractor could not get to and using the brush cutter left me with bleeding (literally) shins from flung stones (I don't own long pants… ********************, I'm a bloody duck).

I initially assumed the RZT (Ryobi Zero-Turn) would use the same 36V batteries my cordless gardening tools used. I sat on one in Bunnings and was informed it doesn't use 36V batteries but a built-in rechargeable one… Too bloody late, I could already picture me riding down my wide nature strip with my flowing, receding hair fluttering in the breeze while I was eradicating that potential new growth forest.

mikeacg, I hate gardening almost as much as I hate reading… At least the Ryobi has a cask cradle which makes the chore of grass consumption sssoooo much more enjoyable and I don't mistakenly sip petrol for my vino… that bloody standard petrol has a red tint to it.

You'd have got on well with a grounds man at a school I did some maintenance on Ducky.
If he didn't like were the horticulturalist planted something he'd just mow it down on his big rideon mower!

Love that guy… the grounds man, not the bigoted 'ralist.
Lucky mine's electric else I'd run out of petrol very quickly. Actually your "suggestion" gives new enthusiasm to prune the roses requests by SWMBO.

It actually cuts.

Boys and Girls,

Anyone interested in proof that my Ryobi Zero Turn mover blogged about here, found that it's owner had the guts… and also the gumption to actually engage the blades to prove not just barbers can give a close shave.

There's not more I can say than can be seen in another one of my warts and all videoshttp://.!https://storage.googleapis.com/aws-s3-lumberjocks-com/qedyh1y.jpg!
Bihind this Covid mask I can't see the smile on your face, but nevertheless I think you are happy with it.
