I love Lumberjocks and the community it represents. I am NOT a fan of the cumbersome interface. Compared to other social media websites (like facebook) Lumberjocks is a dinosaur. Just dealing with photos and videos is unnecessarily difficult. I shouldn't have to upload a separate app (like photobucket) or deal with html scripting to handle media that I want to post. I should be able to update things like "My Shop", but I can't. I think we would have a much more robust participation if the hosts of this website would bring it in line with current technology.

This forum layout is actually one of my favorites. It's quick and easy to get to the content I want to read and casual glance provides a good overview of the latest topics.

Most social media platforms (Facebook especially) drive me crazy so I don't use them. They're designed to encourage people to spend hours wading through the timelines so there's more content than I want to read and the good stuff is buried too deep. I want an overview and headlines so I can skip past 95% of the posts and be done browsing in minutes (once per day). Lumberjocks does this better than most sites.

But I only browse when I have a mouse, keyboard and widescreen monitor and never I rarely use a phone to surf the net. So I guess I might be biased.

Leave Stumpy as it is, you are not required to visit but are welcome any time you want to. I do not visit many other forums but Stumpy is my HOME. These folks are my family. I have even had the children of members adopt me as their grandparent and we visit them in person as often as possible. We have an annual get together with folks from from all over the US and CANADA where we visit and learn from each other. A family reunion of sorts. The best forum of them all with very little bickering, which is not tolerated by any of us. Rants are welcome but NO FIGHTING.

I hate this software, more than any I've used…with one exception. That said, I come back for the great threads and the knowledge found here. But it's in serious need of updating. I frequent this site on 2 computers, going back and forth I find I have to sign in every time, just one of many inconveniences.

There has been a few threads lately that seem to denote the need for this site to renovate or otherwise change "for the better" to suit some folks. I have zero problems with this site just as it is. In it's simplest form, this site provides very valuable information, it is easy to obtain that info and it don't cost a thing but time. Not really sure how it could be made much better, but okay….the old saying, "some people would complain if you hung them with a brand new rope".
I have a father-in-law that puts on this big fantastic Christmas light show. He lights up his entire farm on thanksgiving night and runs it until new years eve. People bring their kids from other states to see this thing. There are animals for kids to pet and interact with, a big display of holiday stuff, music and hot chocolate, apple cider, donuts, pony rides…something for every one. Santa gives a free toy to every kid that sits on his lap!!! All of this is no charge, just a local business man giving back to the community.
It never fails, every year, without fail some absolute idiot shows up and starts to complain. This is all free…$5000 a month electric bill no problem and some moron still complains about something!!!!
They are taken aside and told very quickly that they need to leave…and when they give my FIL that "what" look he always says the same thing…"get your money back on the way out you jackass!!!!" and it's only when they hear those words that you can see in their eyes, it starts to sink in.

I'm the world's largest fan of hyperbole <eg>, but the only way your statement could be literally true is if you use very few interfaces. Any "software" that works correctly, has a consistent interface, and is reasonably reliable is head and shoulders above the standard fare. Maybe your actual complaint is the relatively "gadget" free interface that LJ uses. It may not be as "fancy" as other sites, but it makes it a pretty lightweight process that still works well in low bandwidth situations.

While many seem to think LJs is outdated, it is by far overall the best functioning forum Im on. The navigation alone, except for searching, is far better. Yes there are a few things that could be better, but overall it beats the others, as does the membership.

Does anyone really think Facebook is a cleaner, easier to follow interface than LJs? Apparently so, but I'm definitely not one of them. That site is a total RAM hog, slow to load, hard to follow, flips screens to dig into and 'follow' threads… No way.

It's been far too long since we've seen any true upgrades to LJs, true, but as others have said, it works!

What is most interesting to me is the number of folks who act like a criticism of the software is the same as kicking their puppy. That wouldn't be your particular response, and your last point about low bandwidth is likely correct. But it still needs updating to keep up with the times. "Fancy" has nothing to do with it, just some basic functionality that was left out at it's inception.

I think Cricket and her group do a fantastic job. This is a forum, not a social media site. There is a difference. This is a place for discussion, not bombardment of useless information. This is what the internet was built on. I remember forums before they looked like this and you had to copy, cut, paste, and decode pictures on third party software.

Keep up the good work Cricket and all.

I think this is an important distinction. For me, personally, it's simple in a good way. I can always find what I'm looking for, don't have issues posting. It may lack bells & whistles of other sites, but it always works. I really have no complaints.

To me guys like Brad, Loren and people who have forgotten more than I will ever know are the reason that this site is invaluable to me. I don't come here for social media or political discussions. I come to the only place I know where there will always be answers like this to questions like wiring a vintage Unisaw.
Swapping out the motor will be more of a hassle and cost more than just slapping a VFD on it. The Leeson motor mentioned above won t work as it doesn t have the correct mount - Unisaw motors have a specific mount and is different depending on if it s left or right tilt. You may get lucky and find a unisaw specific single phase motor for fairly cheap, but then you will also have to address the overload protection in the starter - finding the correct sized heaters for the new motor as the existing ones will almost certainly be the wrong size.

The motor shown has a FLA of 12A, so you could get by with a 3hp vfd, such as the TECO L510-203 sensorless vector drive for about $200, or a FM50-203 V/Hz drive for slightly less. The drive can provide a sustained 10.5A and the motor will rarely, if ever, see FLA. The VFD can also sustain up to 150% rated current for something like 30 seconds if you ever do push it to it s limit. There are lots of people running those VFD s on 5hp machines without any issues (eg: See this thread at OWWM). And since the starter on the machine will no longer be needed, it can be sold to recover some or all of the cost of the VFD, reducing your overall costs even more.

Cheers,
Brad

Be careful when wanting a new format. I was a marathoner once. Runners World had a decent forum. Kinda clunky, had its issues, but it worked for the most part.

Well they switched formats and it was WAY worse. I think they shut it down in 3 months. I dont think they have anything anymore. everyone left.

I agree with the Ripper. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. I don't have a problem the way it is. Have never had a problem with it yet. Some sites are just to technical for me. In my case the simpler the better, just my opinion.

How well the search feature works is a different thing than the site look and feel; you could upgrade the site without improving search or visa versa. Search is provided by 3rd parties (in this case google). It could be improved by improving the tagging of all past posts and future ….. but who is going to do that?

I actually think the search works pretty well, if you take care with your search terms.

Anyway, I think the site woks very well, at least on desktop. Never use it on mobile. But then again, even a new mobile interface is going to have a lot of compromises vis-a-vis desktop due to small screens, slower, etc.

I access LJ from my desktop and laptop, no mobile use. I find the interface very easy to use and uploading of pics no problem. IMHO, the BEST woodworking site on the web; and the manufacturer reps as well as the experts of the crafts keep tabs on the threads as well. So many true masters willing to share their knowledge and advice is one of the truly good things about the internet and LJ has a slew of them taking time out of their schedule to chime in and help. And let's not forget the price!
I think the moderators and those behind the scenes that keep this labor of love working do a FANTASTIC job and get my thanks everytime I log in.

iPad user here.
No significant issues with the way LJ is formatted or operated.
Since I have seen many other forums update the software and pretty much implode I personally prefer LJ to remain unchanged.

Regards,
Charlie
