Lumber Jocks Site Upgrade needed

First off I love and appreciate this site, especially the people. Basically the site needs two things:

1. A major overhaul to work with mobile and iOS. It's just not optimized and you can tell on every page you click. Other forum sites are much cleaner, more streamlined, and easy to navigate. Even if we lose some options, in the end, it will be better. Get a NEW professional developer (not the same team/person), ask the crowd here to contribute, and let them dial it in for mobile.

There will be hiccups, yes. And people will complain. But there is absolutely a way to give the user a choice between "old school LJ" with all the unoptimized page, and "sleek, mobile LJ."

2. The damn pictures rotate when uploaded. This is on mobile or desktop. Everyone sees it but nothing changes. It's highly annoying. We need to get on this. Today. Woodworkers are a pragmatic group and I'm sure people will chip in.

It's time guys. Thanks for everything you've done so far (the site and community is amazing) but it's time to take some action. I will absolutely donate if you ask.

Thanks

I don t know about Apple products but I've done a number of tests with Android and can t find a problem with the way the website handles pictures.
It is a problem that is specifically related to Apple devices … has to with the way they encode data (called EXIF tags) into the picture file. Current iPhone models do not automatically convert images to the correct orientation … they just save pictures as they were recorded and write their orientation info into these EXIF tags. While Apple's proprietary photo software reads/uses data from EXIF tags, Microsoft platforms ignore the EXIF tags, so the pix can show up cattywampus.

I haven't tried this, but I'm told iPhone users can prevent rotation issues by shooting with the volume buttons pointing down. There is also an app in the itunes store called Camera+ that will help address the problem.

Thanks Gerry. That's good info.

I finally got the pictures to post properly from my iPhone. I had to take the pictures with volume buttons down and POST the pictures with the volume buttons to the right. There are probably other fixes but this worked for me today.

This had me so frustrated but hopefully it saves someone the aggravation in the future.

Windows 8 & 10 recognize and read exif data. When people say Win7 did not recognize exif data, they mean specifically the OS, but individual photo editing/viewing apps like Irfanview did read and support exif orientation. Lumberjocks strips out exif data so OS support is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is whether LJ reads the exif data and apparently it doesn't.

This website needs some modern science.

You need to go beyond testing Android and start testing people…....

I looked at the EXIF standard version 2.3 (2012). The orientation tag is intended for cameras that do not have the processing power to transform the image to normal/default orientation as the picture is being taken. In addition for reader/display applications, implementation of the orientation tag is not mandatory, implementation is only recommended. But if an application does support the orientation tag and displays the transformed image, when the image is saved it should save the transformed image and set the orientation tag to normal/default(1).

Also, W3C (the web specifications that browsers follow) specifies that jpeg images must be in the normal/default orientation.

I have no axe to grind so in complete disclosure, I used a program that allowed me to change the exif information and found that LJ could not read the altered exif orientation. Honestly I hate web stuff so this is out of my wheelhouse, and I'm not much of a photographer either, but I did the tests because I'm a curious mf that wanted to understand the complaints people are making. Android photos all displayed properly, I assume because they rotate the picture correctly instead of relying on exif orientation. No one in my family has an iphone so I don't know what they do. Portrait pics from my old Sony camera post sideways. Pics from our Canon are too large to upload directly so I have to reduce them in size which alters the exif data. Pics from my wife's old Samsung only post sideways if auto-rotate is turned off. No one else wants to contribute to the tests so there it is. I think I've done more than my part. LJ will either fix the code or won't, probably won't. In the meantime if you have an android phone, your pics should be fine if you orient the camera correctly.
