Lumber Jocks Site Upgrade needed

First off I love and appreciate this site, especially the people. Basically the site needs two things:

1. A major overhaul to work with mobile and iOS. It's just not optimized and you can tell on every page you click. Other forum sites are much cleaner, more streamlined, and easy to navigate. Even if we lose some options, in the end, it will be better. Get a NEW professional developer (not the same team/person), ask the crowd here to contribute, and let them dial it in for mobile.

There will be hiccups, yes. And people will complain. But there is absolutely a way to give the user a choice between "old school LJ" with all the unoptimized page, and "sleek, mobile LJ."

2. The damn pictures rotate when uploaded. This is on mobile or desktop. Everyone sees it but nothing changes. It's highly annoying. We need to get on this. Today. Woodworkers are a pragmatic group and I'm sure people will chip in.

It's time guys. Thanks for everything you've done so far (the site and community is amazing) but it's time to take some action. I will absolutely donate if you ask.

Thanks
Matt Hegedus

Use a computer instead of a damn telephone and the site works just fine!

I know it does. It works fine on a desktop or laptop. But I've been visiting for a year and a half on iPhone and iPad (both amazing computers) and it's still glitchy and not up to date.

I'm sorry if I sound like a dick saying the site needs a mobile overhaul but it's true. And it will continually need upgrades in the future as software/users/devices change.

It would be great to have a good mobile version ….. but not if it means compromising the desktop version, IMHO. I hate sites that assume everyone is going to visit on a phone and optimize for that, leaving the desktop visitor with a lack of features and intuitive controls. Looking at things on a 26" screen is different than a 4" screen.

I'm still having trouble with Morse code with my two cans and tight string between them. I still have to fall back on smoke signals most times.

The world is moving away from the Desktop computer rapidly. Some articles say desktop could be obsolete the a couple years.

This site (if it intends to say in business) will be forced to update this site in the not s near future to surive. You old fogies like you better get with the program or you may be left behind.

Works just fine on my iPad… and I know how to take pictures the right way so they don't get displayed sideways. All sites look crappy on my smart phone, even 'mobile friendly' sites which generally mean dumbed down to just the bare minimum functionality.

I know how to take pictures correctly and still have to manually rotate them 360 degrees to get them to appear correct on the site.. Laptop, desktop, iphone, ipad… doesn't matter. I have to rotate them every time. and yes they are right side up on the device I use

Interesting discussion. I have to say I only go to the site on my laptop. Tried it on the mobile site and gave up, just to hard to use. But to be honest, I really don't think I would go often on the mobile even if it was easy to use. So the summary is, I don't care what you do just keep the site going. The community on here is great at sharing ideas, fun projects and providing great advice when asked. Even when not asked :)

Works fine on iPad for me as well. I basically only use my laptop for sketchup, Inkscape, and word processing now.
I do all my social media and forums on my iPad and find it excellent for that. I would not want to lose features.

The picture thing is easy (a simple crop or edit) but it is a pain educating every newcomer about how to fix them.

Phones are overrated for viewing pictures IMHO. It's nice to be able to pull one out of your pocket anywhere and show a photo but if you want to actually see anything a bigger screen is necessary. ..... and here on LJ, we want to see things.

Rant over…

Don't worry, this mobile craze will blow over soon and we'll be back to 12" CRTs and DOS like god intended.

@matt, the site software is too old. They have made improvements but I guess it needs a rewrite. LJs unique and forward thinking design is now working against it.

Thanks for the panoramic picture tip. Will give it a shot!

I started typing this post on my iPhone and it was basically unusable. "Aw snap, something went wrong" (404 screen twice) and lots of lag between the time I typed a letter and when it actually posted to the screen. Now that I'm on iPad it's not a problem. Maybe I was over exaggerating saying that iPad version is also faulty. I'll try and post a picture from it later tonight, see if it rotates.

I guess everyone's situation is different. I mainly use the LJ site when I'm not home, on my phone. When I'm home, I'm building in my free time. Almost always. So the mobile glitches get really annoying when I'm trying to type a quick post or post a project. I don't carry my iPad around with me. It's too big for the front pocket. All I'm asking for is a better mobile interface that isn't outdated and glitchy. Either way I'll keep using the site and cussing at the software occasionally. I love this place and the helpful attitude (for the most part).

Just trying to help improve things around here.

That is a problem with your device, not the site. Input boxes do not send anything over the wire on a character by character basis. It is all strictly on your device until you hit the "post" button, then everything you typed gets sent at that time. This has been discussed many times before.

My wife's office designs and manage well over 2000 websites.

They run daily stats on all of their clients websites with 100's of thousands of viewers everyday.

Mobile (phone viewers) out of well over 2000 websites and 100's of thousands of viewers daily averages only 6%. Not very many considering the stats and how many millions of phones there are out there.

Forums are "best viewed" on a pc and a laptop, not a phone. I use my phone to contact people, not play in the internet.

Upgrading a forum is "not as easy" as someone would think, especially as large and as popular as this one, and it can be expensive.

I just looked at the forum on my phone and it's very responsive and looks just fine. The only thing that really needs upgrading is the mobile nav menu, and that could be a chore to do.

Then I apologize for saying the software is old and needs updated. I'm using an apple 6s iPhone with latest updates for the record. 6 months old I think.

One rotated picture upload too many!
