The liquid in the wood or knots allows light to travel through the wood. When the liquid dries, light will not show through.
I know this because I've turned a lot of soaking wet Palo Verde, and as long as it's wet, light will go through 3/8" thick wood and thinner. When dry, it's just another piece of wood no matter what the thickness. My thinnest so far is 3/16" thick walls.
Years ago I made some solid shutters out of 1×12 pine with a lot of knots. They went on a west facing window. When the sun highlighted the shutters at about 3 pm until darkness, about half the knots glowed. I looked and could see a bunch of resin in the knots, but it never leaked out. The knots that didn't glow were dry knots…....... Jerry (in Tucson)
