If you don't care about your spelling do you care about the quality of your work? Are you as lazy about a job well done as you are about your spelling? Do you proof your work and not your writing? I don't think so. Lazy in one area, lazy in another. It makes sense…

I've been woodworking for about 40 years now. I'm still working toward that perfect project with no mistakes. I've been working on my spelling for much longer that wooding working and still make mistakes.

I'm am not God and will continue mistakes in both woodworking and spelling. Really I'm only humane. If you expect perfection don't read my post.

On a side note. My brother's wife has here masters degree and then some. She makes here living (and a good one) as a grant writer. She is amazing with the English language. I'm thinking I should print out a bunch of your post and let her proof read them for grammar , punctuation, sentence structure and all that. I bet she could teach you a thing or two.

AlaskaGuy, after reading the above paragraphs I realize English isn't your first language. I admire folks that speak two or more languages. Few Americans do.

It is sad but English is my first and only language. However I will continue to make post and put my ignorance out there for everyone to see. Those who have a problem with that can change the station.

I ll bite.

I disagree. I love to cook. I believe it is a horrible were I to use soup in a recipe. I feel dirty if I use store bought stock in a recipe. I refuse to use nonstick pans. I am a stickler about what I care about, like wood work and cooking. I dont care very much about grammer and punctuation. (At work I am pretty good with my writing, but they are paying for that.)

By the way, I wont dis you if you want to use condenced soup in your casarole. But as for me and my house, we will make our sauces from scratch.

This one had to be resurected, didnt it. It was my favorite thread with the exception of the "I hate SS or ridgid" Which ever one got shut down.

your write tho people who can not spell correctely must suck at every thing that they have done in they're lifes just because they have decided to spend all they're time learning how to woodwork. Just imagine a world were every one knowed how to spell purfectly and were college english majors instead of spending all that time doing the things that they actually are passionate about. I guess by your logic everyone in this world that is truly passionate and very good that the thing they are passionate about must in fact be a fraud if they also aren't as passionate about learning how to speak english properly enough for the grammar nazi's.

Blackie, I don't agree it's technology making us dumb, it's technology making us lazy. If you take the time to contribute to the site then you should take the time to proof what you write. If you don't have pride in what you say how can you have pride in what you do? It's all about attention to detail. The people that don't care about spelling and grammar are the same people that say "close enough for government work". I'm going to go out on a limb and make the statement that if you don't care about the way you write then you probably don't care about the quality of your woodworking. Am I right?

Since I started using computers (technology), my reading and especially my spelling has gotten better.

I haven't walked in other peoples shoes, so I don't criticize them. There could be many reasons a person doesn't spell good, that doesn't mean they don't try, or the quality of their work suffers because of it.
As long as someone gets their point across is all that matters.
No need to be petty.

Maybe it's just not as important to some people, as it is to you.

Would you criticize a person that has savant syndrome because they can't spell?

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones".

You're is an abbreviation for you are. Your is the correct possessive form. Isn't this fun?

This subject is a bit upsetting to me even if your intent is to be funny I don't think it hits the mark. As the person who has posted the most comments on LJs you could spend years saying how stupid I am by judging my spelling and grammar and therefore how poor my woodworking must be. Given that I have a learning disability plus dyslexia I may have to write reread each post up to 3-4 times to make it anywhere near understandable and if I didn't have spell check many more words would be misspelled and perhaps 2-3 different spellings for the same word.
Is this because I'm being lazy and just don't care that my spelling is correct NO! It's because that's the best I can do. I would love to be able to spell things without spell check and not have to read and reread everything over and over just to post my thoughts and feelings. Does my disabilities affect my woodworking ? ,yes it does affect my much of my work in so much as I have to redo many operations and projects, dyslexia makes it so many parts are cut in reverse or upside down or backwards.
I'm not asking for sympathy ,I just want people to think about taking a critical approach to what people can or can not do . Many folks have much more challenging disabilities than I do and I really feel for them ,other than explaining why I spell and write the way I do I really don't think of myself as having a disability at all.

gfadvm, you didn't find grammer or then. I wrote the sentence on purpose. At least have the ability to find all the errors.

Nice of you to give Jim a pass - I'm dyslexic as well - can I have a pass or am I "normal?"

This is my only response to this thread. I'll say this though - there are people like my Dad, and many more of his WWII generation, who didn't even graduate from school and are still smarter than this thread. I have a brother who is dyslexic - much worse than I - and he is a Ph.D. and speaks all over the world in his profession as an expert. He can't spell worth a flip - but I guess he qualifies for a pass also.

A person's ability to pass a grammar quiz or a spelling quiz does not equal how well they do anything else. I could randomly pick out any thread on this site by any one (including DKV) of the best woodworkers here and can find mistakes in them. But the mistakes in grammar and spelling does not make me not trust or appreciate the effort they put into posting any less.

Keep posting all over this site folks-I'll read them all and I promise not to grade your spelling or grammar and will appreciate your efforts.

Gracious - what a silly thing to bring up on this forum. So I've said my two cents worth - I feel better now.

Jock - Similar words that may mean the same as jock include meathead, musclebrain, and musclehead.[5] These terms are based on the stereotype that a jock is muscular, but not very smart, and cannot carry a conversation on any topic other than one relating to sports, exercise, or sex.

Given the name of this site is Lumberjocks I would say it is safe to just change the words sports, exercise and sex with Lumber, Tools & Woodworking.

Last time I checked this is not a magazine or book with professional written articles. Please do not fool yourself into thinking that even the Doug Stowe's & Christopher Schwarz of the world write everything perfectly themselves. They have a team of people correcting their work for them. This site is more a collection of friends getting together at their local guild and passing tips around to one another.

In all seriousness even if this thread was intended as a joke it is in poor taste. It is not us "normal people" with our posts that are spoken in "Ya'll Speak" that keep people from being afraid to make their first post and get involved. It is the people like you in this world that bully, poke & prod people to the point that they stay hidden in the corner afraid to speak up and for that you should be ashamed. I have no expectations that any of this would even make a dent into someones thick skull and make you realize the error in your ways. I have no doubts that even sitting there reading this you are just chuckling away at yourself for getting a rise out of people behind a computer screen. You sir, are the type of person that ruins good websites and forums and are the one that makes people go elsewhere because they feel more welcomed. If the people that ran this site actually care about this site then you are the type of person that they should be on the lookout for and to get rid of. If I want grammar lessons I would get them from my grandfather who has his PHD in English and was a college English professor not some grumpy old man behind a computer screen that is pissed off at the world because back in your day you had to walk up hill both ways in a snow storm all the way to the library to read in a dictionary how to spell a word. As far as I am concerned feel free to go back to your roots and leave us here at LJ alone. Maybe you can go start your own website to show the world how it's down.. I would suggest IQ tests just to sign up
