This one looks to be built in Tenn and in 1997, so I was a little wrong on that part.
He did have it up on an ebay sale and it got up to $611, but reserve wasn't hit. Just found that. So, I know someone was at least willing to spend $611 And, from what I've been reading, I think you may be close on the value - however I AM on the east coast… $900 may be a bit much unless it had light use or something extra to compensate for that price tag request…

 

If you feel it's worth it, then get it if you can't find the same quality for less. If you live on the east coast, and there is a lot of jointers on the west coast selling for $300, what good does that do you? Just saying.
Powermatic jointers are good machines. I would be more concerned about the motor not matching up to your power supply, as in single or 3 phase and 110 - 220 volts.
I've had a 6" powermatic jointer since the 1900's, about '88, and the only thing I've done is change the knives. It's been sitting outdoors since 92 under an inadiquate roof. It has never failed me…........ Jerry (in Tucson)

 

That's a decent price, but certainly try to negotiate a better one.. A new model will run close to $2K. Take a long straight edge and make sure the tables are coplanar. As long as there is no vibration when it runs, and no growling or grinding noises when it spins down, you're in good shape. That's a top quality industrial machine and designed for years of continuous use. I wouldn't be too concerned about it's history if everything checks out.

 

Jerry - I have the ability to wire it however I want actually because I am installing a new subpanel specific to the shop and I'm wiring around my equipment. So, that part is a plus as I can work around a 220v unit if needed. I guess I should check if it's a single or three phase motor however…
Thanks for your words! I am very serious about getting this one. I recently purchased a ton of tools from an estate sale that are worth about triple what I paid. Hand tools, power tools, old hand planes, etc… So, I guess if I got burned $200 - $300 I wouldn't feel so bad - Haha

For around twice as much +/- a little bit you can have a new Oliver.

Is the Powermatic worth his asking price? I'm not sure, but when
one purchases value the item tends to hold it's integrity. As mentioned
above it's co-planar and no unusual noises you should be good to go.

Excellent point! Thanks so much for your reply. I'm really close to pulling the trigger. He definitely will not take less. He has someone that is buying a bunch of other big tools from him and bundling this with the deal will help him out somehow. So, he wouldn't accept $800 from me when I mentioned it the first time. Who knows what he will say if I wait a little bit. However, I don't want to miss out on it as this is one of the last 8" PM models made in the USA I believe (1997)... Not commenting on the actual value of the machine, since I'm of no help there, but in the deal in general…

If you decide $800 is a fair price, stick to it. If he doesn't end up bundling it with the other items, he may take $800. He may not. You could let him know that if he decides he'd rather have $800 cash, that you'll swing by. He may lose more money bundling it with the other items than he would if he sold you the jointer for $800 and lowered the cost of the other items a bit.

While that may be cool, does it matter to you? Sounds like you're looking for a quality jointer at a fair price. Not a piece of history. The quality of the jointer, and the context in which it falls in relation to other jointers of similar heritage would be moot. It's a good jointer, or it's not. If you think it'd be cool to own the last of a dying breed, by all means, pay for it. And perhaps those jointers fetch a higher price, and maintain resale value, because of that fact, and that's completely fair. But if you're just looking for a tool that works well, you can get one without paying extra for the side story.

 

You can get a new Grizzly 8" with 3hp motor for $845 with a mobile base. I know its not a Powermatic, but it's brand new and comes with a warranty. In my opinion $900 is too much for that used jointer. But in the end, only you can make that call.

 

If not having a jointer is holding you back from doing things
you want to do, I don't think fussing over whether
it's a little more than you want to pay is worth it.
$900 is high for my area too but we do know that
used machine prices vary a lot regionally.

Really you can get by with a contractor saw and
a benchtop planer for a long time while looking for
the right upgrades on the used market, but an
8" jointer is what it is. I feel a 6" jointer is adequate
for most furniture and cabinet making and I've
been in productive pro shops where a 6" is
what they use, but if if the extra capacity of
a larger machine strikes you as a feature you'll
enjoy, I think you should go for it.

That said, a lot of woodworkers are happy with the
imported machines and the prices and shipping
terms can be very agreeable.

A screaming deal will come your way sooner or
later if you keep an eye out… and then there
are the ones that get away

 

That grizzly in no way compares with the PM…........

I bought a very similar model for $800 about 9 months ago and have been extremely satisfied with it. Granted, I did spring for the Byrd head but from a mechanical perspective, it's been fantastic.

Personally, I'd do the $900 if he won't move off that number. Sure, it might be slightly overpriced but it's not like there's another one for less on the market right now. Do you want to scour Craigslist everyday until something better pops up? Do you want to take your chances with a Grizzly that could be great but could also start falling apart in a few years?

Its a great machine at a good price and assuming that tables are flat, etc, its a good investment.

 

By the way, Jim says that a PM60 goes for $450-650 in his area but I'm going to respectfully disagree.

He's from Oregon and here's a listing for an old green one for $900. The only ones that fit into that price range are 6 inch models. As mentioned above, jointers hold their value really well and you aren't going to get an 8" for very cheap.

 

At $900, that about half the price that it cost when new. Imo, that's a good deal. New 6" Jet jointers are $900 these days.

A few months ago, I sold a 6" Jet jointer that I paid $499 for 13 years ago for $425.

I plan on replacing it with a G0490 with a Shelix head. It's about $1600 delivered.

If I could find a Powermatic like that one, I'd buy it tomorrow. I've been watching Craigslist for something similar, and haven't really seen any, but I've seen a Delta DJ20 for about the same price. It's very similar to that Powermatic.

 

That is an awesome jointer and you might say, it's one of the last one's from a great era. Quality USA machine. For 900 it wouldn't last around here if you could ever find one. A Delta DJ20 sold for 1100 about 10 minutes from me earlier in the year. (USA) Powermatics are rare to find here because they're sought after and people keep them because of the quality.

Ok, so here is the next little concern on this jointer. Your comments have been SO APPRECIATED.

This 2HP motor is 3 PHASE… Not Single.

I do not have 3 phase and would have to spend some money to create the 3 phase power supply for the jointer.
So, is it worth it to purchase a new Single Phase motor and sell this 2HP 3 phase?

I still would end up with a nice jointer. But, would most likely just run on a 20AMP 110V circuit…

Thoughts?

 

3 phase motors have poor resale value.

$900 for that 3 phase jointer? I'd pass if I were you,
and I think the seller is being unrealistic.

Upgrading to run it will cost you $150 at least.

I have 3 phase equipment and I like it but unless
you're interested in collecting industrial machinery,
it's not worth it for common, smaller woodworking
machines. If the jointer were $400 or $500 I'd
say differently.

 

A 2 hp, single phase, TEFC motor can be $400-500. If you were not planning on putting in a 3 phase converter before you buy this, you will after.

Not worth the money in my book.

 

I have a Grizzly parallelogram jointer G0609, and it is perfectly flat, no snipe. Easily adjustable. Personally I'd get a new Grizzly.

 

Well, I think I may have found something!!! Going to look at it today. It it's nice, I am not hesitating.
DJ-20 - 10 years old and in a home hobby shop that has been unused for about 4 years. $725!!! and 30 minutes from my house! 3 guys, a trailer and some cash and I think my patience has paid off!!!
