Is a 17" Grizzly g0513 band saw as capable for fine work as a high end 14"?

Like many others, I'm debating a Rikon/Laguna 14" vs the Grizzly G0513X2. I get the Grizzly is a great value and has a bigger table and does a good job resawing but the two 14" have a lot of great features that lend themselves to cutting clean. I expect I'll be splitting time between resawing and detail work. Will I be happier with the quailty of work with a Grizzly 17" or a high end 14"?

This is the last machine I need to complete the shop. Every other piece has seemed to be an obvious choice for my needs but this has had me scratching my head.

Yeah, good call though. I ran a 75 amp subpanel to the garage. Powers my 8" Rockwell jointer, tablesaw, brewing system, etc.

I m certainly not an electrician, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But my understanding is that you ll want to pull 10 AWG wire for the 30A circuit if you don t have it already.

Yeah, I tend to do everything over code. A few extra bucks is worth the peace of mind.

Good evening from NC . I am in the same position regarding the purchase of a bandsaw I am new to woodworking and at my age, 57, I am attempting to save my pennies and only by once. I have read countless reviews and looked at both Rikon and Laguna. I think i am going to go with the Laguna 14 bx 220V 2.5 HP. I enjoy buying rough lumber and milling it myself. I wanted a machine that i could use for resawing as well as other needs. I have 220 in my shop for my table saw and jointer that I have yet to purchase.

Given that I am new to the woodworking world any guidance/thoughts is welcome and appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I went through this and chose the Rikon 10-326.
I really prefer its guide system over the other two saws.

I have great 220v all over my shop, but I decided to get the 120v Rikon and it is simply fantastic.

I wanted to buy my saw locally, so I did not seriously consider an order from Grizzly.
I looked at and played around some with Rikon, Laguna, and Jet options.

Yeah I'm interested to hear about the Rikon too. I have the Rikon and hate the bearing guides for scroll work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I had an old 1950s Delta 14" that was great for scroll work but the Rikon bearing guides are too fiddly to get dialed in well for it.

I own a G0513X. Love it. The size cannot be underestimated. I'm sure other 17"+ saws are also quite good. But a 14" will limit you more than you might think. I also own a 14" . I have it set up with a carter guide and a 1/4" blade. I keep the Grizzly setup for resawing. But, on several occasions I've add to change out the resaw blade to a smaller blade when the pieces I was cutting were too big for my 14". The rise on some 14" saws will also limit your resawing. Tough call, but if I could only have one, it would be bigger not smaller.

TimInIndiana - I have the Grizzly G0778 - 14" 1-3/4 HP Deluxe 110V Bandsaw. The Motor: 1.75 HP, 110V/220V, prewired 110V, single-phase, TEFC, 15A/7.5A and have had it on a simple 20 Amp circuit for years. Done resawing etc. and never yet blown a breaker. At most it pulls 15 amps. I have this and many lights on the same circuit. The above information came directly from the Grizzly website. I have not fully discovered all there is to know about my band saw yet. I do know that if you tune it correctly and have a sharp blade any of these band saws will do what ever is needed. I had the cheap version 14" Grizzly Band saw for 25 years or more and it did whatever it was asked to. I even put in a riser in the split and made it into a 10 ' capacity resaw band saw and made the curved boards by resawing kiln dried red oak down to @ .175 thick and 9 " wide probably 12 to 14 feet long.

So I guess it is much more about the operator than the tool. I bought my New Grizzly simply because I moved across the country and and gave away the old one.

I just bought a laguna 1412 a few months ago. I was looking at the grizzly as well. if you get a laguna id get the mobile base. I really like the tracking and tension windows. fence was perfect out of the box. quality control seems to be pretty high from laguna . over all im happy with it.

I got the 17" griz. Love it. Can t imagine wanting or needing another saw. Power, table size, space, capacity…it has it all.

I will take as fine a blade as the smaller, but will also take bigger. I could see me getting a 14" just to have two setup at one time, but I love being able to run the big blades for resaw.

Me to Love mine, resawed some 12" mesquite and it didn't bog down once.

PCDUb has already given the answer to what I prefer about the Rikon guide system over the Laguna, whether it is the 1412 or the BX. I am speaking about the relatively new - maybe out 2 or 3 years now, Rikon saws like the 10-326. Here is the way their website summarizes the saw:

"14" Bandsaw #10-326 is RIKON's newest model with many Patent Pending features that professionals will enjoy - including spring-loaded tool-less blade quides, quick-adjust fence system and quick-lock trunnion table angling system, plus, a quick release blade tension lever, large adjustment handles, hinged safety blade guard with sight window, high work table height, and storage cabinet base. Its dual voltage, 1-3/4HP motor provides ample power for most every work encountered. Designed with two speed options - just change the drive belt on the pulleys to change from fast to a slower blade speed. Includes 6" tall rip fence with re-saw bar. "

I believe you - but the original post asked about the G0513X2, not the G0778. The G0513X2 has a 2 HP motor and pulls 19A at 110V. It requires a 30A circuit.

Awesome info, thanks guys! So it sounds like the Laguna is the best overall and the Grizzly is a more capable alternative that isn't quite as refined but still gets the job done?

TLDR; Laguna if your looking for no fuss high quality and Grizzly if you want the most versatle/capable Jack of all trades.
