HF dust collection upgrades

I have the larger Harbor Freight dust collector and would like to know what upgrades that are reasonably priced and worthwhile you have used. I am not interested in hearing "buy a different system", etc. This is what I have and for at least now am satisfied with it. I have read about bags from Highland woodworking. Are they worth the extra money and what size is correct? Any others?

I built a Thien baffle-definitely worth it. I vent outside without bags-also worth it. I set up a pvc duct system with blast gates. I find it all quite helpful.

I scrapped everything except the motor/blower assembly; mounted it on the wall and fed it via a separation barrel directly to the outdoors, doing away with any filters. I can do this because I don't have any neighbors to worry about with the noise and dust. If you are neighbor free, this is the way to go.

I upgraded my HF with a Wynn cartridge filter, a trash can separator, and a Thien baffle. All good upgrades IMO, with the separator being the best. All on a new mobile base that is a little larger than what came with the unit

Here's a picture and project post with details (web links provided as well).......It may give you some ideas….Questions, just let me know….

In my opinion you and Todd are shortening the life of the motor positioning it in a way that it wasn't intended. Not that it's a good motor in the first place.

Given that DC motors are oriented in more than one position on stock models, what do you know about the way the motor is constructed that would lead you to this conclusion?

In my opinion, you're only on this forum to talk negatively about the harbor freight dust collector in any way possible, we get it, you don't like it.

v

The motor orientation has been in that position for almost 2 years without an issue…..If what you are saying is true, then I'll keep my fingers crossed….thanks for the concern….

soooo, all the cyclones(and other dcs on the market with same configuration) are built to shorten their life, in your opinion?

seems oneida and the likes would have done their r&d before marketing, but im not that smart.

isnt this yours that ya posted in the other HF thread?

Sawsucker,

You may be right. I'm curious to know. But you make assertions and then follow them up with some version of, "If you don't know, I'm not about to tell you." That doesn't help anyone.

So, tell us. Given the fact that there are dust collectors with the motor in precisely that orientation, why would you think that the bearings would be in danger from this configuration? I'm all ears.

Charles, it's become fairly obvious to me that none of you would believe me anyway, so why would I waste the extra time to try to explain something that I really shouldn't have too. Help yourselves.

You have yet to explain anything, so how would you know? Assertions aren't explanations. Explain your posltion.

Pretty sure it s true. Don t know how much faster the bearings could fail but I m pretty sure vertical motors use thrust bearings and are designed a bit differently.

- TheFridge
This is a explanation of a position, Sawsucker. It's not that hard to do.

Of course the question is, what kind of bearings does the HF motor have and how much practical difference does it make?
