I need to build a pair of garage doors to go in a seven-foot by seven-foot opening. The finished project will be painted. I need advice on choosing suitable wood for the project. Softwood is fine, but it needs to be straight, stable, and easy to obtain.

Any suggestions please.

I do not have a design as of yet. I am looking for a carriage house concept. A pair of double doors for the carriage and a horse door. I did a little mockup in Photoshop, but the door design is up for inspiration.
I will attach the before and a Photoshop concept.

My home is Queen Anne Victorian.

I have made many Oak Front doors using full mortise and tenon.

You are in the middle of Western Red Cedar country so you can go with that; kiln dried. A little less common is Port Orford Cedar and Alaska Yellow Cedar. Next comes Alder which is also a local wood in Oregon. Old growth Doug Fir would be better but the price will put you in the poor house. If you can find a local mill that handles local maple (I'm thinking Big Leaf) that would work if kiln dried. Then you get into others like white oak, mahogany, and teak.

Going to building a set of carriage doors in the next few weeks. Did this in the past and I used cypress. Light wood, easy to work with and will last forever. Takes paint well. By far my go to wood for garage doors.

Considered Douglas fir. Price is much cheaper her but hard to find clear lumber.
