Hey all. Fairly new here.. couple months. One thing I am CONSTANTLY having issues with is every 15 or so seconds, a pop up takes me away from whatever I am doing. I understand the site needs ads. BUT.. as I am typing in a response, new thread, etc.. it constantly takes me out of my typing in to a new page for an ad.

This is the ONLY site I've seen that does that with ads. I've seen ads on pages.. but never before while I am typing a response.. having to close the add and/or click back to the tab I was typing in, click back in to the box, to continue.

Is there any way to turn this off? When I have my VPN running, it STILL takes me away but the ad doesnt show up. So I suspect the browser unable to reach the ad (due to ad blocking via VPN) still takes focus away from the input box as I am typing.

It's gotten worse today. It's so bad that after a few times, Chrome even says that it will block popups from showing.

I don't recall what the other ad was, but I managed to grab a screenshot of the Tempurpedic ad that does it.

Sorry. I can't take this anymore. I will only browse LumberJocks using Edge from now on because it seems more effective in blocking ads.

I get zero ads, and don't have any ad blocker or other software, just a suitable hosts file that sends rogue sites to the bit bucket. Not sure if you can do it on a phone, but you certainly can do it on a PC. Check MVPS hosts file for more info.

Yes, the provider of this and other sites don't like it because it cuts into their advertising revenue... but it sure makes browsing the site soooo much better. And if you don't want to use the MVPS file, you can alway add your own entries to your existing hosts file. Just figure out where the errant ads are originating and add that address. Easy.

Cheers,
Brad

Now that Raspberry Pi's are available again, I am considering setting up Pi-Hole for whole home ad blocking. Doesn't solve anything when I'm on the go unless I setup a VPN to go through my home network to take advantage of the Pi-Hole.

I usually have VPN running.. but sometimes shut it down for gaming or something. I just got a phole 5 to run home assistant. Haven't fully set it up yet though. Waiting to fix my dang 3d printer to print the rest of the case for it.

Either stop using the site on your phone; or use Edge as your browser when going to the site while using your phone; or give up and pay for membership which supposedly will not serve you ads.

Anyway there is a thread about this. Put your feedback there as well to express your displeasure:

Not using phone. Always on PC. Usually have VPN going, but sometimes turn it off for various reasons. First time on the site without VPN and noticed that I constantly see tabs show up and switched to them for ads. Seems silly.. just put the ads on the side of the site so we're not losing focus to them while typing.

Can I get more information to help with the issue you are experiencing?
  • Which device are you using to access the site? (Desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile phone?)
  • Have you cleared your cache/cookies? (Don't clear passwords you have saved.)
  • Which browser are you using? (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc?)
  • Is your device and browser fully updated?
  • Are you using any script/ad blockers?
  • Do you have a screenshot?

I am on my PC (Windows). Without my VPN running every minute or so a new tab opens up. It is beyond annoying when I am trying to make a post or reply to someone.. that out of nowhere I am taken to a new tab with an ad. So now I have to close that tab, then navigate back to the input box to continue typing.
Chrome browser. Latest everything. Cache cleared. Etc. Though cache being cleared doesnt have anything to do with ads popping up and taking over.
No screen shot.

I just have to keep my VPN on.. I still lose focus but it doesnt take me from the page at least. Just have to click back in the input box every minute or so.

I don't know why they dont just do what most sites do, embed the ads on the side and not in popups/tabs. Annoying to see ads too.. but with a pay for option to make them go away, that would be fair.
