Bug Report: Cursor Disappears Frequently and Text Stops Appearing While Typing Comments

I have mentioned this bug before.

Frequently while I am typing a post, the text cursor loses focus and disappears, and the website ignores your keystrokes. On my computer and browser (like most), the text cursor is a blinking vertical bar. It moves as you type.

In my case, the cursor vanishes without warning. I type, but the text stops appearing. It happens many times in any given post. It happened between the "y" and the "ou" above in "It moves as y [cursor lost here] ou type." (The cursor also disappeared twice while typing the previous sentence, by the way.)

I type rapidly, looking at the screen, not the keys (touch typing). The text suddenly stops appearing. The only workaround is to move the mouse to the point were you were typing, click to activate a new cursor, and start typing again until it stops.

This bug has been present for many months. I have mentioned it before. At least one other member has the same issue, but I do not remember who. The bug appeared at least a dozen times while typing this brief post. It is annoying.

macOS 10.12.6 (old) with Chrome browser, version 103.0.5060.134.

On another forum, this same question has been asked. The replies are all over the chart. What device are you using, what kind of mouse, software, yada yada yada.
I am on a laptop with Win-11 and a wireless Logitech mouse. I was having fits with the curser. This morning, I chunked the old mouse and installed a new one. I am a much happier camper now.

I know, I'm 'that guy'. I'm running Linux Mint 22 Wilma, Linux Kernel 6.8.0-49 generic, Brave Browser, on HP laptop. Everything runs fine. Well, ... for the moment. I like to mess around with the software and often get myself in a bind. For example I tried loading Linux on my Mac Mini and broke that one dead. Somehow the Mini forgot how to boot and I couldn't fix it, humiliated that I had to go find a Pro. 🤬 I didn't lose any data so I was happy, and I promise not to run Linux on the Mini until there is a stable release. Anyway, mine is working fine, no stopping cursors.

The first thing I would try if I were one of you guys is a different browser. Try Brave, Duck Duck, Firefox, or Opera. Stay away from the main MS, Apple, and google stuff, they are spying on you. I'm serious, they are spying on you. I'm shocked by how many people are using Chrome. There are many browsers available and they use different rendering engines so they will present the data a different way and this could clear up the skippy text. There is no reason to stay with the corporate product. Try some open source software.

This afternoon I tried out Opera, Gnome Web, Librewolf, Firefox, and Brave and they all work well with Lumberjocks. I like Brave and Librewolf the best, Librewolf is very clean. I keep a copy of Opera just in case I have trouble browsing, it's a bit different and sometimes works better. I don't know why it sometimes works better, but I'm glad it does.

In case it helps, the loss of cursor seems to coincide with ad changes on the right side of the screen. I do not know if it is 100% related to that, but I am certain it happens some of the time.

To be clear, I am stuck on an older OS for now, but I picked up one or two technical skills in my past. I am not eager to keep trying browsers on my personal system just to debug VerticalScope's issues for them. ... and VerticalScope has a huge number of bugs and technical issues. Sure, I could use other OSs or browsers, but who wants to boot up another system every day just to participate in VerticalScope forums? ... and I currently active on only one of them. This one.

Why are VerticalScope forums the only forums that prevent me from using my default Safari browser? That is why I installed Chrome and set it aside for use on VerticalScope forums and the rare websites that won't load in Safari.

I am one of the few who reports bugs. For every one of me, there are a 1000 prospective new members who don't bother and just go away when they encounter website issues.

Other forums do not have these issues. VerticalScope has them in abundance. It takes long term vision to understand that investing in your platform stability yields long term profits. I suspect that VerticalScope is so focused on revenue and cash flow that they under-resource and neglect the platform that drives their products. That is just a feeling. I have no inside knowledge.

I know my options, and I know how to workaround most bugs. Nonetheless, the cursor activation bug exists and is real. It is intermittent but frequent, and a serious hindrance in a reasonably common user configuration. Others are seeing it and similar bugs. If I did not report it, who would?

Outstanding comment. (y) (y)

Your choice of Chrome and Safari is good because they use different rendering engines, Blink and WebKit.

One thing I noticed about about my browser experiment is that some browsers like Brave have an ad blocker built in and others have one that you can add on. Some of them allow non-annoying ads which I like because I don't wish to cut off all funding just stop the blinking and popup ads that either take my time to close, cover up information, or distract me by giving me seizures.

Other topic, I migrated to Linux because Windows was getting way too fat with bloatware and the new version that MS forced you to upgrade to simply wouldn't run on my computer. I didn't have the $$$ necessary to buy a new computer so I tried a free OS, Ubuntu. I had an epiphany. My computer ran like it was brand new. With a little work Linux can run much better than Windows. Apple is, of course, different, they simply stop supporting older computers. Mac OS is actually a 'fork' of Linux. Old Mac's still run fine but they won't run the new software. I've had Mac's run for well over 10 years where PC's with Windows time out after 3-5 years. My newest PC went straight to Linux simply because Windows is the most annoying OS ever created.

Hey all. Fairly new here.. couple months. One thing I am CONSTANTLY having issues with is every 15 or so seconds, a pop up takes me away from whatever I am doing. I understand the site needs ads. BUT.. as I am typing in a response, new thread, etc.. it constantly takes me out of my typing in to a new page for an ad.

This is the ONLY site I've seen that does that with ads. I've seen ads on pages.. but never before while I am typing a response.. having to close the add and/or click back to the tab I was typing in, click back in to the box, to continue.

Is there any way to turn this off? When I have my VPN running, it STILL takes me away but the ad doesnt show up. So I suspect the browser unable to reach the ad (due to ad blocking via VPN) still takes focus away from the input box as I am typing.

Can I get more information to help with the issue you are experiencing?
  • Which device are you using to access the site? (Desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile phone?)
  • Have you cleared your cache/cookies? (Don't clear passwords you have saved.)
  • Which browser are you using? (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc?)
  • Is your device and browser fully updated?
  • Are you using any script/ad blockers?
  • Do you have a screenshot?

It's gotten worse today. It's so bad that after a few times, Chrome even says that it will block popups from showing.

I don't recall what the other ad was, but I managed to grab a screenshot of the Tempurpedic ad that does it.

Sorry. I can't take this anymore. I will only browse LumberJocks using Edge from now on because it seems more effective in blocking ads.

I get zero ads, and don't have any ad blocker or other software, just a suitable hosts file that sends rogue sites to the bit bucket. Not sure if you can do it on a phone, but you certainly can do it on a PC. Check MVPS hosts file for more info.

Yes, the provider of this and other sites don't like it because it cuts into their advertising revenue... but it sure makes browsing the site soooo much better. And if you don't want to use the MVPS file, you can alway add your own entries to your existing hosts file. Just figure out where the errant ads are originating and add that address. Easy.

Cheers,
Brad

I am on my PC (Windows). Without my VPN running every minute or so a new tab opens up. It is beyond annoying when I am trying to make a post or reply to someone.. that out of nowhere I am taken to a new tab with an ad. So now I have to close that tab, then navigate back to the input box to continue typing.
Chrome browser. Latest everything. Cache cleared. Etc. Though cache being cleared doesnt have anything to do with ads popping up and taking over.
No screen shot.
