Yikes! I opened a project on LJ and as it was loading the ads on the page, it suddenly opened this webpage instead. Hitting the back button took me back to the project page. First the Ted attack and now this.

I get it that this site is using ads to pay for it but it can be a little annoying at times. I have gotten used to a forum (https://www.ketogenicforums.com/) that runs on software called Discourse. It remembers what you have read and picks up there rather than making you scroll through the entire page so you can see more ads. Think of how nice it would be to start reading where the green "new" is when you click on a subject. After posting the back arrow takes you back to the main page instead of the post you just posted (this is where all the double post come from I think.) Another nice feature is that as you start a post it searches for similar posts and displays them on the right side to discourage duplicate subjects or asking a question that has already been answered. It is like an auto search for those (like me) that don't always search first. It is really nice and therefore probably really expensive.

The worst one for me right now is FWW. There are very heavy handed with pop ups that cover the page and have a small close X to hope that you inadvertently click the ad when you wanted to close the window.

No, I don't use an ad blocker though after looking at the chrome task manager and seeing all of the scripts running, presumably from the ads on the page, it might be time. Any recommendations?

I really like AdGuard myself. It blocks all of the YouTube ads for me. They even have their own DNS servers that you can use to filter out a bunch of other unwanted traffic. I don't use that feature since i run Pi-Hole locally at home.

Here's a screenshot of the pi-hole dashboard. Nearly 30% of my internet traffic (the orange box) is blocked because its ads or other unwanted crap. This includes traffic from all mobile devices as well.

Pi-Hole maybe pretty technical to get setup but man is it nice to sit in my chair surfing on my tablet on a much more sanitized internet.

Update: I decided to look into AdGuard and learned that you can get ad blocking done simply by changing the DNS servers in your router to theirs with no need to install any software at all. It works well. It is much nicer browsing without literally dozens of ads loading on a page; however, I just did a little research on AdGuard and discovered that they are based in Russia or at least their DNS servers are physically located there. With all the news about Russian hacking, I am not sure that using them is a good idea. A DNS hijack could direct your bank traffic for example to a bogus site. I might have to look into Pi-Hole or other options.

Update 2: Doing a little research, I stumbled upon a low tech solution that so far seems to be working well. I found this idea to use your Windows hosts file to blacklist ads without any software or pointing to an alternate DNS server. You basically just download his list of websites and point them to a non-existent IP address of 0.0.0.0. There are other blacklists available on github and other places. If ads start showing up, I can just download a new blacklist or add the offending sites to the list myself. The nice thing about this is I have total control of the blacklist without the risk of a nefarious or hacked ad blocker. Time will tell whether this approach could still slow down page loads.

BTW, I thought I posted this earlier but I must not have hit the post button (or it was deleted?).
