glued up piece cupped after planing - 7 replies

When I make my 13” pizza peels I glue a 5/8” ish blank up. After glueup I run the blank thru the planer to its’ 1/2” final thickness, I check to enusure that the blank isnt’t cupped/warped, and then taper it further on a sled thru the planer to its final tapered shape (approx 1/8-3/16” at the tapered end) . Mo...

Personalizing wood projects with transfers - 5 replies

Hi – I’m selling pizza peels, bread boards and other “crafty stuff” on Etsy. Occasionally I get requests to personalize stuff for customers. I’ve told them no because I don’t have the CNC or engraving machine to do it. I’ve seen posts about using iron on transfers for applying decals …. I haven...

use only super glue for joints on small box? - 4 replies

I’m making a quick 12×18” serving tray that’s about 2” high with simple rabbet joints at the ends. Would using only super glue only for the joints hold up over the long run? I”ve used it for to glue splits .. before but not as the only glue for a project. I think it’s probably ok but thought I’d ge...

If not Klingspor, what? - 19 replies

I remember reading in some previous posts (probably from awhile ago) that some of you thought there are better sandpapers than Klingspor. If that’s true, what do y’all prefer, for a 5” random orbital sander?

Carter guides on laguna 1412 - 1 reply

Does anyone have experience with using the Carter replacement guides on a Lagina 1412 bandsaw? Do you like them? Was it worth replacing the X?!!$$? Laguna system?

(yet another) wood id - 10 replies

I recently picked up four boards of what I thought was what I thought was maple. When I started working with one of them it’s apparent that it’s not maple. I think I might be ash or hickory. The color is more beige and not as white as maple. The grain is really fine/tight and almost interlocked in the woods seems a lot denser and Maple. Here ar...

Clamp storage - 4 replies

Thought I’d share how I store my clamps in the garage/shop. I screwed cheap shelf supports into studs. This has worked well for the last 25 years. The only problem is I’m running out of room. I also bought a Metrocart from work years ago and use it for c and f clamp storage and other stuff. It has also become a catchall for some unknown r...

Disposing / using lumber shorts - 12 replies

I wood ( :)) like to get rid or lessen my accumulation of shorts used in a useful way. I’ve kept them around “just in case” however they haven’t been and I’m getting tired of them now. Bread boards are an option of last choice. Is my pile typical, small, normal, large?

#1. I don’t know why it’s in my cabinet (going to throw it out) -and anything else that resembles it. #2. My daughter in law liked the color – it’s for a desk I’m making my grandchild. #3. Don’t know why I agreed to this finish (see #2?) As far as I can tell I’m applying it according to the ...

shellac and "unfinished windows" - 4 replies

WE got new Pella windows which were supposed to be unfinished. The wood is clear however it’s not like any unfinished wood I’ve ever had in the shop. This pine and maple are very slick and somewhat glossy like some sort of clear coat has been applied. The shellac I’ve applied (~2 lb cut) just sits on the surface and looks like ...

sources for Delta 50-868 air filter remote - 0 replies

I have an older Delta 50-868 air filter that had the batteries corrode/explode in the remote. After cleaning the board and resoldering the battery connections the remote seems to be dead. The part is marked obsolete/no-replacement at the online parts houses e-replacementparts, online-parts… , none on ebay. Any ideas where I can find a com...

laguna 1412 guide blocks question - 8 replies

I don’t believe I know enough about my 1412 versus other bandsaws. Is it normal for the guideblocks to not be parallel to the blade across their entire width after tightening? The guides toe-in to the rear. It’s always bugged me and doesn’t seem normal. Maybe it’s an artifact of how (poorly) they adjust and tighten. Seems...

Repair 50s style table legs - 8 replies

I told a neighbor I’d repair table legs on her grandmothers table. They appear to be force fitted and glued into a dado cut into the top. It looks like support blocks were put on each side as an afterthought. They were pinned to the top but not fastened to the leg. The question is how to fasten them better to the top. Fasten tge support block...

sharpening Delta 37-190 6" jointer blades - 5 replies

It’s time to get the blades in my Delta 37-190 6: jointer sharp. Are the sharpening jigs worth the time/effort to get the sharpness quality needed or should I save time and buy a new set of blades? What about a jig to set them? I’d like to get a helical head for it but can’t justify the price. It’s time or money. ...
