Home page facelift

I've started to work on the home page facelift. I'd like to make it more appealing and inviting.

I'm thinking about presenting one random hot project with much larger photo (compared to the project thumbnails). This would become the main focus point of the home page. Next, I'd like to feature recent projects, most active and recent forum discussions and most active members on the home page.

Any more ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Ok, here's an idea for the pulse portion on the homepage.

I like being able to see the activity there… but since the day job keeps me away for a good bulk of the day, I can generally only see what people have posted or commented on for the past few hours (wasn't a problem a few months ago, but membership and activity has really taken off)

Anyhow, how about being able to scroll down through the past 24 hours worth of activity?

Martin, this isn't a direct response to your question, but I would like to see some means of sending members a PM Private Message without revealing their email addresses on-line. Some other forums (not blogs) that I post to have this facility. Sometimes, it would be good to answer some of the comments in private. Members could opt in or out of this on their profile page, but as the email address privacy is maintained, most would not object.

I'm sorry, Martin. I was just meaning that I like this site … so much that i put a direct link on my site. You've done an incredible job on this so far, so I'm sure if you feel lead to do some improvements, they will be great.
Have I told you lately that this is a great site? And I'm not suckin up so you'll extend my membership either.

I just happened onto this thread this morning, and I was wondering if the projects could be broken down into different categories, such as, Turnings, Furniture, Rustic, Carving, Artistic, And on & on.

As this forum gets larger it may help to break it down to something like this.
Maybe this is asking for to much.

Hi Martin;
"....but I only have so much time, you know", and yes I do know. Time is something I can't seem to get enough of, always wanting to milk the clock for more. Ha! I have managed to get at certain times of the year 25 hours in a 24 hour day but I'm not going to explain that one yet!

Again let me say thanks for all the features; past, present and future that you are giving us here at LumberJocks. Interesting enough Martin, I noticed on the site somewhere as to your mentioning Engish being a second language and then there is 'the language of Ruby also' keeping those programing fingers on fire as they blaze out new areas in web application framework, or I might say, 'Rail' writing 'Ruby' code.

Oh well, once again thanks,
GODSPEED,
Frank

Another idea for the home page.

How about a "New Posts" button? I do use the LumberJocks Pulse facility, but because you can't scroll beyond the 15 posts that are shown, it's difficult to know who has contributed what. As the LumberJocks membership grows and presumably the number of daily new entries increase, this would be an easy way to keep up with the activity.

Martin .
I just noticed that there's no counter's on the forum topics, is this feasable?

I think he means number of people who have viewed that specific forum topic… I guess as a way of judging how much interest the topic has generated?

I'm torn. A part of me writes just for the sake of writing and doesn't care who views my blog entries. But another part of me enjoys seeing which entries get viewed more than others.

Pretty much all of me enjoys seeing how many people view my projects, though.

Martin,
I'd like the number of views, similar to the projects. I'm like Ethan, it would be nice to see the amount of interest in the topic

Thanks Martin,
As if you have nothing else to do. I'm sorry to add to your burdens.
