Craftsman 113 table saw motor vibrating/running rough

The short: I have a Craftsman 113.298032 Table saw. I bought it a few months ago and have been using it pretty heavily, but it has been performing well for me. The motor just started vibrating/running rough. I included a video at the link below. Notice it runs rough while turned on, but coasts smoothly to a stop when I cut the power, so I assume the bearings are fine. It’s dust free and well oiled. There’s a slight amount of play when I move the arbor/shaft (whatever it is called)

My Dads Craftsman table saw was running rough, the pulley on the arbor was loose. Is the pulley on the motor loose? The pot metal they’re made of can get wallered out.

Good luck if it is the bearings, those are sleeve bearings in that motor. I couldn’t find replacements for mine, not mention they are very hard to get out. The part that hold the bearing on the end bell is pressed on, so when you do get it off it will most likely be too damaged to be useable.

Before you go ripping apart the motor make sure the pulleys and belt aren’t causing the problem. Look for the simple stuff first. Once you eliminate them as a problem run the motor without the belt and see if it is the motor bearings or if not then it is likely the arbor bearings.

Put a hand on the pulleys, see if they wiggle any

Put a new belt on the saw ( you too, if needed) as any belt drive that has sat for a while will mold into that shape. Motor pulley is skipping through the “kinked” spots where the belt sat on a pulley. BTDT. Might get a link belt to see IF that helps.

Yep, check for a loosened pulley ( 113s are famous for that) and replace the belt. Should be enough.

That does not sound good! I have a 113 saw and had some vibration & noise. I found the pulley was loose, so snugged that down and also replaced the belt with a v-link belt. That made all the difference on mine, but by the sound of yours, that isn’t the issue.

When was the last time you oiled the motor?

I’d go ahead and split it open, clean it out and check the oiler felts anyway. Can’t hurt and you may find something obvious.


PS: Sleeve bearings can be replaced if that is the problem, but they aren’t near as fun as ball bearings :)

I should have made it clear in the post that the pulley and belt have been removed. The video I included shows this. I also cleaned and heavily oiled the motor. So definitely the bearings, then?

Maybe… maybe not. No way to be sure until you crack it open. Could be as simple as accumulated crap that just needs to be cleaned out or a centrifugal switch that got out of whack and needs a little bending back into shape. Open it up… it’s not hard.

I say bearings. If your belt tension was too tight you can ruin them very quickly. I can’t tell how that motor is assembled but if you take the four nuts off the end and remove the end cap you should be able to pull things out You may have to drive the bearings out by getting a piece of pvc pipe the same size as the OUTER RACE ONLY and use it to drive out the bearings. Go to any motor repair shop and they will match up what you have. Ask for Japanese bearings, not Chinese ones. I’ve taken a few motors apart, it’s not that hard.

One thing I want to point out though – that motor is incorrect for that saw. It looks like a blower motor judging from the mount (is it 1750 or 3500 rpm). It should have a start capacitor on top of the motor housing and a thermal reset switch on the end. You may be better off buying an actual saw motor.

I have to agree – that sounds like bearings to me too.

As for the comment about a blower motor – it does look like the cheaper mounting brackets used for blower motors. I’ve used many a blower motor on woodworking tools, though, no shame in that!

You mentioned oiling the motor, does it have oil cups with the flaps over them to oil the bearings? If so, they are probably sleeve bearings and they are more problematic to replace – not impossible, however.

And as MrUnix said, no way to be sure until you crack it open. Hot tip – mark the housing and end bells before you disassemble so you get them back in the same orientation when you put them back together.
