Hello everyone,

Novice woodworker here. I just purchased my first drill press, WEN 10” 5 speed. When i got to the part in the assembly instructions to install the chuck, it said to tap the chuck on the spindle, but it did not say HOW FAR up the spindle to tap it. So, I tapped it until i determined it could go no more, but there is about a 1/2” gap between the top of the chuck and the groove near the top of the spindle.

The drawing in the instructions shows the chuck all the way to the top of the spindle, but the picture of the assembled drill press online and on the manual cover shows it about 1/2” from the top of the spindle. Of course, there is no customer support on weekends, so i thought I’d ask you…is the chuck OK where it is? I did a test drilling on a 3/4” board with no issues as far as the chuck falling out.

Here's the model from HD.

Thanks for your replies.

Should be a taper fit.. bang it on until it stops and you are done.

I looked at the manual, and it looks like you just have a tapered shaft to hammer the chuck onto. It will only go the right distance. Most of them are a Jacobs Taper (though the book doesn’t say)....that will be important if you eve have to replace that chuck.
