I know the word rare is overused, but this one is apparently actually a rare spokeshave. Here’s the description of this from sydnasloot:
“Made only between 1877 and 1923, this scarce spoke shave has two blades, facing each other. The idea is to facilitate working on wood that has frequent grain reversals. This one is an early type, having Traut & Richards 1876 patent date on the underside of the handle.”

I accidentally won this on ebay when bidding on it assuming the price would zoom up. When I got it, it turned out it has the original parts including period correct cutters (Stanley Rule and Level, see picture below) and thumbscrews and no cracks. It was a bit of a risk because the seller didn’t know any of that or have good pictures.

I chose not to clean it up yet because it has some collector value so I want to let whoever gets it decide to clean it up or not. It does have stable brown rust on parts, but it doesn’t look like there would be much pitting, if any.

I’ve seen them listed for $150 in similar condition and go for quite a bit, but I wanted to give anybody on LJ a chance first for $100.

A little hard to reduce the glare, but this side says P[at]ented with a sideways B through it

This side says April 18 76
