Basically im interested in trying to spalt some small birch branches, i have like 4-5 branches that are about 1-1.5 meters long (3-5 feet?) that have been in the basement for like a decade, they were there before we moved in.
Just recently got a bit curious about them, when i cut one of them up i noticed there was very little spalting that had developed on it, very very little, and thought id give it a shot and try and spalt the rest of them.

Ive been reading on all kinds of sites about different methods, a whole lot of recipes with beer involved :D
Sticking one end of a log into the ground and putting some soil on the top end, just leaving it outside in the shade, putting leaves on it, letting it sit in grass the list goes on and on =/

Just wondering if anyone got any good suggestions/methods? We have plenty of leaves that are floating in a net in the pond that i will need to pull out pretty soon -.-

The image was so big when i embedded it that it got cut in half (not sure how to fix), so heres the link

I’ve never tried spalting my own wood but over on, there is an article about spalting your wood. Here is the link.

I hope this helps.

on very oily woods (pecan) i bury it.. most woods just lie them on the ground.. takes about a month.. all my fire wood splats out before i use the complete pile.. in the spring the bottom layer goes to the shop for possible lathe duty
