I am hoping to start a hardwood stair project soon but I am coming up short on yards to supply 5/4 10in x16ft lumber for the routed stringers. Poplar is the preferred species, but I will take anything to avoid laminating stuff up. Anyone know a lumber yard in the twin cities area that would have long pieces?

If you’re going to put carpet on them or paint them most builder supply stores here have 5/4 syp already cut. Our big box stores here have them also.

A lot of the builders here buy 2 by’s in syp, cut them to size, plane them down and then run a bullnose on the front. That’s what I did with Cypress when we built our home. My wife eventually put a 24 inch wide carpet strip in the middle of the stairs.

One of our daughters in her home has syp stairs with Waterloc on the steps with a 24 inch carpet strip in the middle and they’re very pretty and easy to maintain. She also has syp floors on the complete lower floor of her home. She has a beautiful home and gets wow comments on her floors and stairs.

I am hoping to leave the stringers exposed on the sides…over the drywall. The treads and risers will be maple and dato’ed and wedged into the stringers. The stringers just need to be paint grade wood, poplar preferable for hardness and price.

If I do laminate, is it better to laminate 2/4 and 3/4 lumber together, or 5/4 thick but 2 pieces 5in wide to make 10 in?
