Curiosity question. I was looking for a darker brown stain with a hint of red. To achieve this, I tried to use a base of General Finishes Rosewood water based stain. Then topped with multiple coats of General Finishes Brown Mahogany gel stain. It looks nice, but a bit too red. I’m wondering if I would be ok to start with the brown gel, then Rosewood water based, then more brown gel on top. First, would that work ok. Second, do you think it would reduce the level of red using that technique?

I don’t believe you can put a waterbased stain over gel stain. The gel stain is a glaze and can go over bare wood, stained wood, sealed wood, and even glazed wood. But the water based stain is only intended for bare wood.

I would agree with Paul that it most likely won’t work , but there is always a Test peice to find out.
