I stopped by Wooden Edge on my way home from work Friday and was surprised to see a for sale sign on the fence. Talked with Ken inside and he advised me that they were trying to sell the business and building ( a rumour I’d heard and hoped was not true). As of a month from now there will be no Wooden Edge in Brandon…I am very disappointed as they were a great resource and always very helpful. I’d bought all my large wood working tools from them and now will have to travel to Winnipeg to scope out tools… A crummy way to end the week. Anybody interested in buying a woodworking shop in Brandon? No I don’t work for them but I sure would like them to stay open.

Well they are gone, closed up shop, stock sold/moved out and now an empty building.

Another one bites the dust. It’s a shame to see it happen. I’ve never heard of this shop but I hope someone buys it. This day and age we have to root for the under dogs. Good luck in Brandon.

I recently talked to a Woodcraft store manager. He said that their type of store has to be in a metro area with at least 1 1/2 million people in order to succeed. They figure that only about 2% of the population has interest in woodworking.

With fewer opportunities for woodworking education in secondary schools today I suspect that this percentage is not going to increase in the future.

The rockler in Tinley park closed about a year ago. I was bummed about that one closing! It’s a shame when the local woodworkers store goes the way of the dodo.
