Stopped by a garage sale and found a neat looking box along with a few other items. it was dark in the garage so I didn’t get a good look at the box just noticed that it looked old. After we got home and I pulled it out I started looking at the details. My $3.00 garage sale buy is a music box from the late 19th century inlaid with ebony and ivory. I really wish I had the know how to bring the box back to it’s original condition, either way it is very cool.

Whoa. Maybe attach a 500W tube amp circuit with some concert JBLs to the music box when it’s restored? I’m sure the wife/GF won’t mind a sweet audio setup like that in the house.

Wow,that box has middle eastern/Persian design .great find.
The inlay is plastic if it’s recent or bone if it’s genuinely old.what king of bone? I just don’t know .

The box is very old and I had someone that works with ivory take a look at it and did the hot needle test. It is legitimate ivory.

Nice catch there, Eric! The music movement might just need some TLC and some light oiling. Good luck with getting sound to come out of that beautiful box again.

Isn’t it amazing what people have and are not interested in knowing more about it? Nice find.

Finally got a “you suck”. I was really amazed when I got the stuff home and started going through it all. The box is the only thing woodworking related but there was a ton of sterling silver and old items using ivory. The lady passed away and her neighbor was selling her stuff. Total investment $37. Find of my life.
