I’m just going to go out on a limb here, but I’m pretty sure any new profile that has the words buy, online, pharmacy, or any pharmacutical is probably not here to learn or post about woodworking, there has been quite a rash of these in the past few days. I learned a buddy of mine from my area joined the site and went to look for him…. well I had to look at who a1jim was welcoming to find who I think is him because the newer jocks are predominately spam sites, just a heads up.

I also see that alot of the actual woodworkers that join and don’t put any information at all in their profile.

That doesn bother me if they want to stay secrective and not give out any information, but it does throw them in the middle of the spammers and hard to sort out.

I usually don’t comment on a thread if they offer no information at all about themelves or at least what kind of woodworking they do and experience they have.

I’ve heard the arguments here and always thought the problem was overblown a bit, but I just looked at the newest list of members and there are a few (16 of the first 35) that might be spammers. I don’t want to falsely accuse anyone, but Cheap Codeine No Prescription and Alprazolam Diazepam Without Rx are odd names to give yourself on a woodworking site. I could be wrong – it might be French or something, and if so I apologize.

I’m amused by the self-appointed gatekeepers here who welcome ”Fatburner Rx” or ”ColonCleanser 2500” to the site continuously. I believe the return notifications they receive in their email inbox from the welcoming messages is what encourages them to sign up here. After all, they are garnering replies!

Robot replies from Lumberjock members to new members should be prohibited due to the unforeseen consequence of their actions.

JustJoe: Maybe this is why our perennial welcomers describe this site as ‘addictive’ to new members?

Anyone else notice they’re starting to add their “Workshops” so they can put their advertisements there too? I enjoy looking at other folks shops, so if I see someone’s shop in the pulse page list I generally click on it. Lately I’ve been seeing these new “spammers” are using the workshop pages to draw you in too.

31 of 33 newest members today are spam and all area ads for fake drugs from Canada. Unless LJ is countng on the fake profiles to raise the traffic count, and thus increase ad profits, what is so hard about banning the IP? It takes 10 seconds of typing in the .htaccess file, or – depending on the host – may even be do-able in 5 seconds from the IP Deny Manager on the control panel.
I’m retired, I’ve got time and I hate spammers. Give me some limited access to the backend and I’ll spend a few minutes a day squashng them like bugs.
